About this listen
When Special Agent Clay Jennings and his K9 partner, Ranger, take to the streets of Denver to fight human trafficking, he is shocked by the inordinate number of stolen innocents who’ve been forced into the sex trade. With each new face, his resolve to help these children escape their personal horror grows stronger. El Clark, a social worker who dedicates her life to rescuing exploited kids from the streets, works valiantly to locate their families or find them a safe place to live while they recuperate. She understands the plight of these young victims more than anyone knows.
When these two champions of enslaved children team up, they discover a web of deviant corruption that reaches into the upper echelons of US politics and society. Adding to the nightmare, a vicious serial killer focused on murdering female prostitutes threatens to pull Clay and El away from unearthing the man behind the treacherous, Colorado-based, child prostitution ring.
For Clay, working to solve these crimes is like taking one step forward and three back until El shares her story with him. Inspired by her bravery and fortitude, he is re-committed to the fight for justice. Clay and El battle against a mountain power and money the height of which they’d never conceived and end up building a strong bond with one another along the way. El teaches Clay that every life they change matters - that they must do what they can, even when it’s only one child at a time.

I was absolutely blown away by this story!
This is the second book by Jodi Burnett I have read, or should say listened to, as I received the audio book version.
I was absolutely blown away by this story about sex trafficking of young children.
Clay Jennings, the leader of the K-9 unit and his teams are trialling working with general law enforcement. As part of this operation he is exposed to the seedy world of sex trafficking and realises how little he knows and understands, and is surprised how gentle and supportive his K-9 partner and highly trained attack dog is with the young girls and boys they come across.
He also meets Eloise Clark, the attractive social worker, to whom he is strongly attracted to her and cannot accept that she spurns his advances – he doesn’t usually have to work so hard to get a date. As their paths keep crossing she also gains his admiration for her dedication to saving and caring for these victims, tirelessly working, not only in her job, but giving up her free time to raise awareness of sex trafficking and to help the women rescued from that life. For the first time in his life Clay doesn’t just see a woman to have a bit of fun with, but someone he wants to get to know properly and for whom he is falling. El is attracted to Clay, but she rejects him, because she harbours a secret. What she hasn’t reckoned with is Clay’s persistence and he gently and sensitively cracks through El’s self-protective shell, ably assisted by Ranger.
We also follow Candy, one of the trafficked girls and see the harrowing plight of these children first hand through her eyes and the lengths they have to go to, to survive and the dangers they are exposed to.
One of these dangers comes from a serial killer who targets prostitutes. Special agent Rick Sanchez, whom we have encountered in books one and two of the K-9 series spearheads this investigation and collaborates with the trafficking taskforce to warn the street workers and track down this killer.
There is so much action, blossoming romance, human interest, cold-hearted money making, evil and disgusting human deprivation, the heart breaking plight of young lives being destroyed, as well as showing the goodness and caring of people; all layered skilfully and insightfully on top and side by side - it is breath taking.
...and not forgetting the unconditional love and protection dogs give us so freely.
This audio book is narrated by Kimberly Austin and she reads the story with great sensitivity to the scenes and circumstances the characters find themselves in. It made for a very enjoyable listening experience.
I received this book in audio book format from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.
