Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Pearl Mackie, best known for her role in Dr Who.

When sensible, sophisticated Flora Poste is orphaned at 19, she decides her only choice is to descend upon relatives in deepest Sussex. At the aptly named Cold Comfort Farm, she meets the doomed Starkadders: cousin Judith, heaving with remorse for unspoken wickedness; Amos, preaching fire and damnation; their sons, lustful Seth and despairing Reuben; child of nature Elfine; and crazed old Aunt Ada Doom, who has kept to her bedroom for the last 20 years. But Flora loves nothing better than to organise other people. Armed with common sense and a strong will, she resolves to take each of the family in hand.

A hilarious and merciless parody of rural melodramas, Cold Comfort Farm (1932) is one of the best-loved comic novels of all time.

Delightful, funny and brilliantly performed.

It’s taken me several decades to finally become properly acquainted with this classic and what a superb way to do so. The stark contrast between the rural melodrama and the no-nonsense cheerfulness and determination of the wilful Flora comes across beautifully thanks to Pearl Mackie’s narration. I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend it.

Unusual but a good listen

Some parts rather slow, but very enjoyable. Quite an unusual story, it would have been nice to have known what was in the barn!

Fabulous

One of my favourite books, beautifully narrated by Pearl Mackie. Her reading brings out all the humour of the book and certainly does it justice. Will return to listen to it again in future.

Goat

Nearly a hundred years after publication this still works as a parody of so many books I know well. I am studying this for a WEA course so appreciated the audible along with the ebook. Pearl Mackie does a good job with the voices but I think Mrs Beetle could’ve been more Margolyes

Light hearted and an easy listen...

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. No complicated plot and easy to guess the outcome, but well read and of its time.

Enchanting

I am biased, this is possibly my favourite book in the whole world, but as such I was both delighted and anxious when the audio version (at last) became available.
I need not have worried, the reader was splendid, capably handling both Sussex rustic, county posh and east London accents, and giving a most empathetic reading.
A rich cast of characters, deliciously funny, delightfully spun with some fascinating “futuristic” elements ( remember this was written in 1931 ) I loved every minute.
