About this listen

Winner of Best Narration by the Author at the Audie Awards 2020 for With the Fire on High.

Finalist in Best Young Adult Audiobook at the Audie Awards 2020 for With the Fire on High.

The stunning new novel in verse from the 2019 Carnegie Medal winning and Waterstones Book Prize shortlisted author of The Poet X. 2020 Goodreads Choice Award Winner of Clap when You Land.

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people....

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the Principal's office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance - and Papi's secrets - the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered. And then, when it seems like they've lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Papi's death uncovers all the painful truths he kept hidden and the love he divided across an ocean. And now, Camino and Yahaira are both left to grapple with what this new sister means to them and what it will now take to keep their dreams alive.

In a dual narrative novel in verse that brims with both grief and love, award-winning and best-selling Author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives.

Powerful story beautifully narrated by the author

I strongly recommend this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the book was narrated by the author who make the prose come to life in such a realistic and powerful way. I was surprised to discover that it wasn't an autobiography. This is the best audiobook I've listened to in a long time.

Loved this!!

This is a story of grief and loss and love and the emotions held within are raw, and mixed, and relatable. I enjoyed it from start to end.

Bringing to light a real issue

Great book . Had to be written to tell an untold story about the reality of living and working across time zones

without the correct words

what a familiar journey to take. Being born in another country and similar outcomes for so many girls in my home country, .this brought to it all back. Makes me appreciate how hard my mother worked to get me out of a similar situation I could have ended up in. Thank you for putting pen to paper.

A lost & found of grief

The story weaves together brilliantly exploring multiple elements of shock, grief, secrets, acceptance & compassion. Well worth a listen.

My only queries about the book would be that there seems to be no solid positive male character. Men are portrayed as being arrogant, liars or perpetrators of sexual assault. Perhaps this has simply been the authors experience or she wanted to focus on the female relationships in the book more but it was something that stuck out to me.

I did find one of the voices hard to listen to. At points the intonation pattern and aggression in her voice is akin to a cringeworthy high school slam poetry performance. It gets better but certainly initially it was distracting and nearly made me stop listening.

Exactly what I needed

I consumed this in one day and I really think that is the best way to take in this story as the author is one of the narrators.

As someone who had no idea how Dominican people sounded, let alone American-Dominican people, my mental voice could not have done the characters justice.

Moreover, Acevedo's beautiful prose employs repetition in an entrancing manner that the narrators time perfectly and, again, reading this from the page, I probably wouldn't have gotten the full impact of that device.

Wow!

Firstly, I don’t think this audiobook could’ve had better Narrators, they were both incredible! This story brought tears to my eyes on numerous occasions, I really felt the emotion through the narration. But I loved it so much, would 100% recommend!!

This is now a new fave. What brilliance!

Loved this so much. i didn't expect the spoken word nature of the story and it was captivating. This is so beautifully written and performed. I think anyone who has had a difficult relationship with a parent will laugh and cry at this story, especially if you are a person of colour and especially if you are an immigrant. Thank you to the writer and the performers - I loved this.
