About this listen

Matthew, they thought, was just going through a phase of talking to himself. And, like many parents, they waited for him to get over it, but it started to get worse. Mathew's conversations with himself grew more and more intense—it was like listening to one end of a telephone conversation while someone argued, cajoled and reasoned with another person you couldn't hear. Then Matthew started doing things he couldn't do before, like counting in binary-code mathematics. So he told them about Chocky—the person who lived in his head.

Such an edifying story. Imagine your child is hearing a voice in their head. What would you be thinking?

In this book the story shares the parental viewpoint as well as Matthew (who Chocky had invaded). The relationship between father and son is beautifully portrayed.

This is an amazing book. Highly recommended.

One of the most wholesome books I’ve ever read!

Written in the 1950's but still fresh.🤔
We were primitive then and still are 70 years later. The way it describes is squandering the world resources back then has not changed.😱
This should be on the school reading syllabus.
A good listen, well worth the time.😄

That little voice in your head might be real.

Not as humorous as The Day of the Triffids, but I find Chocky to have a human element missing from some of Wyndham's other works. It was rather touching and I'm quite partial to it.

Can't comment much on the performance as I listen to it at 1.5x the speed so it all becomes rather monotonous, but I'm not much bothered. I feel it suits the genre. Nevertheless, I warmly recommend this production.

Wyndham becoming a favourite.

Apart from the obviously dated gender stereotypes, this was a lovely story, with Wyndham’s normal perceptive slant on human failings.
