About this listen

Groom, best man, guests, even a bishop - but where is the bride? An orphan fresh out of convent school, Prue Pagan has no home and nowhere to go. Then a chance meeting with her worldly-wise friend Cleo lands her a summer job in the north of England at Mountjoy Castle, where generations of the Mountjoy family have loved, lusted, and scandalised their neighbours. Prue's innocence is no protection against the wickedness of the English upper classes. As a long sultry summer settles on the castle and its surrounding villages, Prue must find her feet and make friends in an unfamiliar world of musicians, aristocrats and witchy housekeepers - and fend off the advances of attractive, predatory Valdemar Mountjoy. Will Prue take fright, listen to her heart - or succumb to the temptations lurking on every side? Music, magic, mischief, and mayhem entangled with more than a hint of midsummer madness make for an enchanting, witty, and romantic listen. Escape into another world and delight in the lives of a host of fascinating characters. This is the England of Wodehouse and Downton Abbey, where wickedness and scandal lurk beneath the superb self-confidence of the upper classes.

Persevere - you might well be surprised

It took me a while to get into this book with its Enid Blyton type dialogue and rather over the top characters - and then I stopped questioning whether I liked it and just went with the flow. Surprisingly I found myself looking forward to the next instalment and by the time I reached the end I was hooked on the Mounjoy family and their friends. Read tremendously well with an impressive array of easily distinguishable voices.

Not wonderful

Ok story and characters - with some very amusing lines - but really not well narrated.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

I've now downloaded all novels in this series, which must be a testament in itself. The stories are interesting, the characters engaging, and they are all beautifully read by Dawn Murphy, who manages to give different and recognisable voices to a large cast of protagonists. I thoroughly recommend.

Enid Blyton for adults

It was a struggle to get through this book and nearly gave up a couple of times. a very stilted performance did nothing to help the story. The narrator was reading it like she would to a class of 6 year olds which ended up being rather annoying. Sorry but won’t be listening to the next book I am just glad this one is finished!
