About this listen

Meet Caltro Basalt. He's a master locksmith, a selfish bastard, and as of his first night in Araxes, stone-cold dead.

They call it the City of Countless Souls, the colossal jewel of the Arctian Empire, and all it takes to be its ruler is to own more ghosts than any other. For in Araxes, the dead do not rest in peace in the afterlife, but live on as slaves for the rich.

While Caltro struggles to survive, those around him strive for the emperor's throne in Araxes' cutthroat game of power. The dead gods whisper from corpses, a soulstealer seeks to make a name for himself with the help of an ancient cult, a princess plots to purge the emperor from his armoured Sanctuary, and a murderer drags a body across the desert, intent on reaching Araxes no matter the cost.

Only one thing is certain in Araxes: death is just the beginning.

Love these narrators

I started this book because I loved Moira Quirk's reading of The Locked Tomb series. She's great in this as well, although the empress-in-waiting sounds very like Harrow. She and Samuel Roukin compliment each other nicely and I have no idea why I haven't read Ben Galley before now.

The world logic gets a little boggy now and then but no worse than in an epic fantasy and this is a lot more fun.

Good story with excellent narrators

The story is slow but solid, a setup for book 2.

The narrators are amazing though, and the way thy put across the already good writing gives the characters so much life.

Very enjoyable (especially as its free)

Really enjoyed this. Interesting world and some interesting characters. Decent performances from both narrators. Looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

Wasn’t expecting to love this so much?

I listened to this because it was in the audible plus catalogue and I love Moira quirk as a narrator. I was just listening with a sense of curiosity but by like the mid way point I was HOOKED (lol- if you’ve read it u get why that’s lol) I loved all the characters, humour and really cool and unique world building! Damn it I’m gonna have to buy the rest of the series now

Interesting concept and good pacing

Action and intrigue are a constant throughout.

The story took a while to grip me, but it certainly has potential. There is no resolution at the end, instead the story cuts dead leading into the next, so there’s a distinct lack of climax which is somewhat disappointing but otherwise pretty good overall.

Average

Was recommended this title and was eager to start but was left disappointed with a thin story, abrupt ending and poorly paced novel. Won't be reading book 2.

Absolutely Loved This!

I've had mixed feelings about the included Audible goodies, but this is an absolutely phenomenal fantasy tale of necromancy and intrigue that has shades of The Locked Tomb series with a slightly more serious tone and somewhat more traditional fantasy setting.

I heartily recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Gideon the Nineth or who simply enjoy good grim fantasy.

The narrators are phenomenal.

I genuinely can't say enough good about this book and can't wait to check out the rest of the trilogy and the rest of the author's work!

Such a unique story

Having already read these books beforehand, I was a little apprehensive to listen. But once I realised Moira Quirk was a narrator, I was sold, as she is my favourite narrator.

A brilliant story which I know gets even better with the next installment and then better again with the final book. I will be continuing the story by picking up the next books for sure.
