Summary

Moira Illeniel was the name she lived by, but her true heritage was more complicated than that. From birth she was the secretly adopted daughter of the most powerful wizard in the world, but few knew that her true birthright came from the Centyr lineage. Traveling to Dunbar to discover the fate of her vanished father, Moira must face the darker aspects of her power. Forced to fight a foe unlike anything seen before in Lothion, she will learn the reason for the warnings her mother's shade gave her - why certain abilities should never be used and some lines never crossed - for some doors, once opened, might never be closed again.

A very enjoyable listen

Another great addition to this collection of books. I have enjoyed listening to all of the books revolving around Mordecai and family. I would recommend reading or listening to them in the order suggested by the Author on his website.

Good, but could be better

I've enjoyed so much the first book, all that day to day struggle to get stronger, to understand the relationships around the MC with his family and friends. The finding his loved one, and trying to resist her advantages on him. But then, the second book has its good points here and there.. what bothers me is that the story speeds up too quickly. There are clear holes in the story where more character development should take part for example* SPOILER * (the love which arises from the dark of the mage companion towards MC), (the friendship between the dragon and the hunter) and (connection between the small dragon and MC which is so utterly missing after appearing as an important family in the first book at every important turn).

This book still remains interesting and worth the time and money, but I'd give it a strong 7.5/10 because of the content that might have made it a masterpiece, just like the first book was.

problems with continuity

I enjoyed the book but there were some glaring continuity issues. I eont spoil it by pointing them out but they are there.

battle stuff

The fast speed option on the Audible app is very handy for getting through all the battle descriptions, (in any audiobook, not just this one) they are SO tedious, I find myself drifting off, zoning out, just not gripped at all until there's some dialogue again. I really do not care about which hand a sword is held in, or where an opponent was stabbed, I want to know what happens to the characters and where the story goes to next. I still enjoyed this because the author and the narrator are very good at the various characters, and I want to know what happens. I wait for the next in series.

Book 2...

Now onto book 3. I hope that shows that this series is well written by Michael G Manning, complemented by superb narration by Daniel Perkins.

struggled to stay engaged

I typically enjoy this author and his characters but I really could not warm to or empathise with the main character of Moira. I may not continue with the 3rd book because of this, who knows?
