Fun characters

These are books 3 & 4 of the Carolina Connections series. I haven’t read or listened to books 1 & 2, so I went in blind & managed to keep up with this group of friends. The Lucky One features Jake & Bailey. These characters were fun! Tomboy Bailey can't seem to keep away from Jake Beckett, even though she's a bit off men after the raw deal she got from her ex. Loved the story & Meg's narration. The Game features Emerson & Gavin-Emerson, who was introduced in The Lucky One. Gavin has a past that he's well grown past. I love the way he pursues & supports Emerson, and I loved her Grand Gesture to him. Kelsey Navarro did a great job with the voices and I found her male narration quite good.

I received a copy of this audiobook. My honest opinion is voluntarily provided.

Two times the cuteness

The Lucky One

This was such a cute love story with some big surprises and of course lots of laughs.
Sometimes even the Tom boy gets the guy.

The Game

This was a home run!
I loved getting to see Gavin in his element.
Emerson & her bestie were amazing!

An enjoyable set of romcom audios

= The Lucky One
I am currently listening my way through Sylvie Stewart’s Carolina Connections series and having a damn good time doing so. This is the 3rd book in the series and while each book is a standalone, we did meet both Bailey and Jake in the previous books in the series.

I really liked Jake as a hero. He was all-in for Bailey and was pretty much a smitten kitten from the very first but still retained his strong, man’s man-ness! I liked Bailey, too, but I didn’t identify with her all that much. She was a bit of a tomboy who was only just starting to find her girl card. I mean, she hadn’t even seen Dirty Dancing if you can imagine!!

This book is read by only one narrator - Meg Price. She does a good job of playing all the roles and while I could easily follow different voices speaking to each other within scenes, I admit to that because the book is written from both Bailey and Jake’s viewpoints, I sometimes forgot whose head I was in during certain chapters. I would definitely have preferred a male voice for Jake’s parts.

I would definitely recommend this book or any of the Carolina Connections series. Sylvie Stewart is a gem of a romcom writer and I’m so happy I came across her as she really brightens my days with her funny and romantic stories. 4 stars.

= The Game
Older woman / younger man is not a trope I’m particularly fond of so I was already going into this story with some trepidation. But I *had* to read Gavin’s story. I normally get over my dislike of a trope once I’m into the story - but the main conflict in this story was the difference in the ages of Emerson and Gavin, so there was no way I could forget about it as it was brought up relentlessly!

Gavin and Emerson were a sweet couple and I did feel a connection between them. Due to Emerson’s reluctance to make something more of their relationship, it’s something of a slow burn - but it works for them and for the story. It still sizzles, more towards the end.

I listened to this book in audio and it was performed in its entirety by Kelsey Navarro. It’s written in dual viewpoint so the narrator reads from both Emerson and Gavin’s points of view. It works just fine, and I never found myself confused, but I do tend to prefer two different performers for the main couple. Kelsey Navarro has a nice voice that’s easy to listen to and she told the story well.

I was really torn between 3 and 4 stars when I finished this story. I went with 3 stars in the end but I ultimately enjoyed my time spent listening. The trope wasn’t my favourite but if it doesn’t bother you, give this book a go.
