About this listen

Summer 1940.

The defense of a nation depends on just a few young pilots. After invading and occupying half of mainland Europe, Adolf Hitler set his sights on the British Isles. Although the Royal Navy and the British Army were ready to fight, the first line of defense was the Royal Air Force and the men of fighter command.

Call Sign Panther tells the story of the Battle of Britain as seen through the eyes of a young pilot, Jack Sommers. Arriving at RAF North Weald, he must quickly learn the art of aerial combat and adjust to the complications of squadron life. As the threat of invasion hangs over the country, the pressure on Sommers and his comrades intensifies.

As Winston Churchill said, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

Absolutely brilliant and highly recommended.

I have no real knowledge of flying and little understanding of the detail of the Battle of Britain but this book provides a beautiful and sensitive description of this important time in our history. The characters are likeable and so well described that you really get to know them. The scenery and setting are brilliantly narrated and the whole book is excellently read. I highly recommend it.

A Great Listen!

I loved listening to this hugely evocative tale. The story brought to life the historical aspects of the Battle of Britain and give a realistic perspective of life in a squadron in the front line.

An excellent tale

A fantastic tale of a young pilot in WW2 told through the eyes of a young Hurricane pilot. Some awesome story telling with a richly described back drop and an insight into the life of a young pilot of the time. An exciting tale best described as full metal jacket in an Shelling flight jacket.

Not for the WW2 connoisseur

A big consumer of WW2 aviation biogs, I am not usually a fan of military fiction, but decided to give it a go, having recently rediscovered the excellent ''Squadron Airborne' by E Trevor and 'Bomber' by Len Deighton, on Audible. I stuck with Panther Squadron about half way but couldn't finish it. I wanted it to have something extra to compensate for being fictional, like the two aforementioned books (e.g. great writing, compelling characterisation, deep research). But it didn't do so in my opinion, and I couldn't stop wondering why the author wrote it given the numerous real-biographies out there, some of which are brilliantly written ('Fly for Your Life' for just one example). Nevertheless Panther Squadron felt fairly authentic (no glaring historical inaccuracies that jared with me, and generally realistic) and someone with a passing interest might enjoy it. But this book is not really for someone with a serious interest in the subject matter.
