Summary

Ryan is a detective with the abused-persons unit of the Mass. State Police. He loves his job, and he’s very good at it. He balks when his supervisor assigns him to a case with the cold-case unit, and not just because that’s out of his area of expertise. Everyone in Cold Case is an alpha, and that’s just not a comfortable place for an unclaimed omega to be.

Nick is a detective with the cold-case unit. He’s a strictly by-the-book detective. He trusts procedure and precedent to get the job done. He doesn’t mind getting stuck with a highly visible case. He doesn’t even mind getting stuck with the pretty omega from Abused Persons, so long as he sits down, shuts up, and doesn’t screw with the process that’s worked well for years.

Ryan and Nick butt heads almost immediately, although it doesn’t take long for either detective to figure out that at least part of the reason for their strife is the scorching chemistry between them.

When their cold case seems to parallel Ryan’s life a little too closely, and when Ryan’s methods don’t fall exactly in line with cold-case procedure, will their differences drive them apart?

A bit different

I really enjoyed this story about Ryan, an omega, and Nick, his alpha. It is just that bit different and entertained me thoroughly with any boredom creeping in.

Nick, a Cold Case detective, is paired with Ryan, an Abused Persons detective. Tension is caused by Nick going "over the top" alpha and refusing to believe that Ryan can be, and is, an excellent detective. Nick is very unlikeable at times, but I was never given the feeling that they didn't belong together. How they work things out, together with the suspense of the case they work on, make a fine story. I also liked the way the history behind the case is woven throughout and does not look out of place in this alternative world.

Unfortunately, I did not think the narration always did the story justice. In the first chapter alone, Devlin sometimes became Delvin and file became rifle. The reading also felt and sounded robotic, although this did improve later on.

Brill

This is a brilliant book to listen too. It is a heartbreaking story of two kids being killed 40yrs earlier it has twists and turns. Also the detectives on the case have personal issues with each and they fight which also makes it heartwarming as realise how to make a life together.

Relationships require respect to work

I was given this audiobook as an advanced listener.
The key synopsis of the book is in the supporting blurb that comes with the audiobook.
I enjoyed this story because it was meaty with many strands running through it which all came together.
It made me think of that song in the musical South Pacific ' you have to be specially taught'. ....You've got to be taught
To hate, And fear, You've got to be taught,From year, To year, Its got to, Be drummed in your dear little ear......
The cold case spins on how people manage differences in race and Ryan and Nick troubles are based on being an omega and an alpha. Knowingly or unknowingly these prejudices can cause harm and also affects the idea we hold of ourselves.
The strength in this story was that both the crime story and relationship development are well balanced and engaging. I also enjoyed Clancy Jones narration and I hope I hear some more of him.

Diversity and love...

Ryan is an abused persons detective. He lands in a cold case with an Alpha partner from Cold Case. All Alphas are looking him down but he is good. The case is interesting and Ryan was a great asset. I think he and Nick were hot together and sparks flew but Nick needed a kick on the rear. I enjoyed this book and it happily ever after.

Eh.. No!

Clancy did a great job narrating this book but the actual story didn't work for me. I found Nick absolutely detestable and I waited for him to redeem himself and was not satisfied at all.
