About this listen
When a deadly virus sweeps the country, Vivian Thomas sets out for California in hopes of seeing the daughter she gave up for adoption. Then her car breaks down, and she's faced with a choice. Give up or accept a ride from redneck brothers Angus and Axl, but she's prepared to do whatever it takes to reach her daughter.
The virus is spreading, and by the time the group makes it to California, most of the population has been wiped out. When the dead start coming back, Vivian has to figure out how to be a mother under the most frightening circumstances, cope with Angus' aggressive mood swings, and sort out her growing attraction to his brooding younger brother, Axl.
While searching for a safe place to go, they pick up a pompous billionaire who may be the answer to all their problems. Trusting him means going into the middle of the Mojave Desert and possibly risking their lives, but with the streets overrun and nowhere else to turn, it seems he might be their only chance for survival....

fantastic Listen!
one of the best postapocolytic/zombie books in the genre. A absolute must listen. From the first chapter the bond is building between character and listener, the relationships tight from the beginning. Straight away I’m drawn into the book and care what happens to these bunch of people hacking there way through this bleak and ever changing canvas. I love and hate characters in this book that bring out true emotion, laughter and tears. any book that can do that in my book deserves 5 ☆'s. Great all round Zompoc listen.

Vivian's Heart Beat arrghhhh
I like this story, it's very much character driven and the way the characters adapt to the world and each other is well paced and enjoyable.
However I nearly had to stop listening as the Vivian character is endlessly describing her heart and stomach, it punctuates everything she does "my heart pounded" "my heart pounded faster" "my pulse quickened" "my heart was in my mouth" "I could hear my heart beating" "my stomach lurched" "my heart froze" "my stomach clenched" my stomach flipped" "my stomach dropped" "my stomach twisted" it started to get really, really annoying....rant over, it's mostly a great story!

Zombies, Rednecks and world ending viruses!
I received this book via a promo code and this is my voluntary review.
I started this series upside down.
First with "Survivng the Storm" and then in the Oklahoma Wasteland series which is set 9 years after the initial outbreak and follows Kellan and Regan getting together and learning of the dangers posed by the CDC, then I jumped another 9 years and met Meg, Jackson and Donaghy in the Twisted World series who are the generation of survivors after this one and have never seen the world from before the Zombie outbreak. (I do not reccommend doing that as I now know the fate of Angus, Vivian and characters like Joshua, to get the full impact, start with Broken Stories.)
I listened to Broken Stories, the short stories of the various characters and finally diving in with this story which centres on Vivian & Axl, Meg's adoptive parents and how she met her Uncle Angus during the first few days of the virus. Vivian is in a race against time to get to California to see her biological daughter Emily who she gave up for adoption.
Along the way she meets other travellers, like the James brothers who are trying to flee the virus despite the governments lockdown, then Joshua and 2 students, before she knows it, the diverse group is hold up in a hotel when they rescue a billionaire with the best survival digs that money can buy if they get him there...
It does end of a cliffhanger but in the best possible way. Kate L Mary's work is addictive.
**Update.
I have listened to the rest of the Broken World series via my online library subscription.
It did not disappoint!
For those who want more POVs, like Axel, that comes in book 3 and in book 4 we get Hadley Lucas and John's perspectives too.

Loved this story
What a pleasure it was to listen to this book. There’s likeable characters you get invested in and you cheer them on and fear for them at times.
The narrator does a fantastic job voicing each character in a unique way.
I would highly recommend this story
