About this listen

A romance writer, scared of physical contact due to her traumatic past, has just become a new neighbor to a giant firefighter. How will it go?

“You are bad for my sanity.”

Alicia: The only thing I’ve ever wanted was to forget what happened that night so I could move on with my life. An impossible feat, considering the demons of the past refuse to let me go. Jumping head-first into the unknown seems like a good place to start. So I move out of my childhood home and away from the pain lurking around every corner. It would have been a great start if not for my new next-door neighbor, who slightly resembles a Yeti. His attitude does little to convince me he’s not.

Mark: The only thing I’ve ever wanted was to help those unable to help themselves. Something I’ve had a lot of experience doing ever since childhood. A simple life without drama is all I yearn for. And I almost had it…That is, until my new neighbor moves in next door. The one that screams in the night, hides bodies in her backyard, and bewitches my beastly dog. Ignoring her is the best option. So how come I find myself saving her every single night?

A firefighter who dedicates his life to saving lives with no one around to save his, and a writer desperate to create worlds where her demons can’t touch her. What’s common between them? The pain they hide.

They say you shouldn’t let the past define you. But when the past becomes all you are, sometimes you just need a blank page....

This book is part of a series of interconnected standalones. This slow-burn, strangers-to-enemies-to-lovers, contemporary romance is filled with angst, yearning, and finding peace.

Each book contains a story about a different couple. No cheating. No cliffhangers. HEA.

TW: SA in the past (not from MMC). Strong language.

Broken Souls

Broken Souls is the third book in the Little Hope series. This is the first Ariana Cane book I have read. This is a slow burn. Alicia has been barley skimming by. She went through a very traumatic experience. She decides to meet her neighbor. Mark is her neighbor and a fireman. This is a very emotional book.

Angelina Rocca and Jason Clark did a fantastic job narrating this book.

You never know where you will find love!

I love finding new authors and now that I have listened to Ariana Cane's Broken Souls, I will be on the lookout for more! Alicia is a romance author who cannot get over her tragic past. She is hoping this first step of living on her own is going to help her, but the first night has her relying on her next door neighbor to help with problems in her apartment. Mark, a firefighter is there is help with each problem she has. Always available, he finds himself at odds as he knows he can not be that person. But there is something between them pulling them together. That is until the unthinkable comes to light. Will it pull their new found peace and love apart? I love the flow of this story. It's a bit mysterious as we get to know Alicia and Mark. Their pasts are slowly revealed, leaving the build up of their friendship grow on trust and feelings. It's just the right amount of angst and emotional tugging and was a fantastic listen.

Angelina Rocca and Jason Clarke are perfectly cast for this story. They each know how to fall into the broken soul characters and let me feel their pain, growth and change. Together they played with my heart, had me feeling each scene and enjoying the surge of emotions. It loved their performance.

Great story

This is a first read for me from this author and I was impressed. While I did gets vibes that these books are interconnected, it was easily read as a standalone. These characters are amazing and have full backstories that will  really have you rooting for them as both individuals and as a couple. This story is pretty deep and very emotional. I do love the character progression and the attention that is paid to mental health and recovery. Be sure to check content warnings because there are some serious subject matters that come up pretty frequently.

The narrators did an amazing job bringing every emotion to the forefront. Jason Clarke was perfect for Mark's character and is exactly what I would have imagined he would sound like. Angelina Rocca has such a beautifully lyrical voice that I could listen to for hours, which ended up being perfect because I didn't want to turn this book off.

Alicia and Mark!

The events of one night changed who Alicia was and for the last eight years she has only been a shell of herself. Even though she is nervous it is time for her to try and gain some independence which begins with renting a home. It was only natural that she would make mistakes, but it seems like Mark, her neighbor, is always there when it happens.

Mark is a fireman with a difficult past who prefers his solitary life. In the beginning he finds his neighbor infuriating however the more time he spends with her and the more he learns about her past the more he wants to help her heal from her past.

Both Mark and Alicia are damaged by their past and don’t believe they will ever truly be happy. Theirs is a story about an unexpected love and healing from the past. Through the performance of Adriana Rocco you could feel the pain that Alicia was in and Jason Clark did a great job with the tortured hero Mark.

Emotional and heartfelt

I really enjoyed this emotional small-town romance about Mark, a hunky firefighter, and Alicia, a romance writer, as they help each other heal from their past traumas.

It’s the third book in the series, and while it can be read as a standalone, it might be better to read in order since there seems to be a connection to the previous book, through Alicia’s brother. The romance is a medium burn (despite being marketed as a slow burn), with great tension, a dash of humour (thanks to Mark’s dog, Ghost), and a creatively resolved third-act breakup.

The narrators totally nailed it. Jason was the perfect Mark, highlighting all the different parts of his personality. Angelina Rocca’s portrayal of Alicia was very moving – projecting the emotions the character was going through with great accuracy.

If you like emotional small-town romances where characters help each other heal, you should check out this book.
