About this listen

Captain William Brewer has returned from the South Atlantic with hopes of spending some time with his wife, Elizabeth, and their new daughter, Anne. There is a new threat in the Caribbean–a pirate named Black Rose has created a panic among merchant sailors. The attacks are becoming increasingly violent and deadly, and the pirate always leaves a calling card to claim responsibility: a single black rose on a victim’s body.

Brewer is drawn in to the chase when a ship drifts into the harbor at St. Kitts full of dead and wounded, along with a single black rose. Brewer is sent out to find Black Rose, but he is soon recalled when news arrives that his old ship, HMS Revenge, has been taken over by mutineers! Brewer must find and deal with the traitors before turning his attention back to Black Rose, whose plan for revenge on Brewer and a member of his crew threatens to destroy them all!

very good spin off and well worth a listen.

The story and narration were strong enough to not require the background sound effects however that said the effects were not intrusive nor did they take from the overall performance. I suppose its a personal preference

Another brilliant Brewer book!

Once again James Keffer delivers a rip-roaring tale featuring the resolute William Brewer. The usual beloved characters are there alongside a couple of new members of the crew who certainly will be interesting to watch develop. The narrative is fast-paced and tight as you would expect from Keffer with plenty of action scattered throughout. We also get a glimpse at the darker aspect of Captain Brewer's psyche when placed in an unenviable situation (no spoilers, you'll have to listen to find out).

Nigel Peever's tour de force performance brings the novel fully to life with his extensive vocal talents and audio FX as always. Each character's voice is so well crafted that there is never any confusion as to who is speaking and the sound quality is top notch with no noticeable breaks in the production.

Overall this is an excellent addition to the Hornblower's Legacy series and hopefully with many more to come.

Brilliant!

Another brilliant episode in the life of Lt Brewer, this time he is chasing a pirate with a calling card of a Black Rose, the story is fast paced and there are wonderful characters both old and new. With Mutiny and Kidnapping Brewer has his work cut out but is ably supported by his old crew and man servant even when it gets very personal. A Superb listen enhanced by the talented Nigel Peever's narration and the wonderful sound effects throughout this 5 star listen.

black rose

I enjoyed the narration of Nigel Peever, he brings out the salt in the sea and you can imagine the wind in the sails. Perfect

Brewer, is chasing a pirate with a calling card of a Black Rose. He has his hands full between the a mutiny and a kidnapping. This is a great paced, pirate action packed story. A great listen.
