Summary
Acclaimed biographer Carolly Erickson brings history vibrantly to life with her powerful flesh-and-blood portrait of Charles Stuart, the Young Pretender to the British throne. Courageously attempting to conquer England, this significant figure in Scottish history divides the troubled British kingdom and disturbs decadent monarchies throughout the entire European continent. Convinced he was meant to be king, handsome 24-year-old Charles secretly gathers a motley band of rebels in the Highlands of Scotland. He marches his undisciplined troops fearlessly through the English heartland in a daring military campaign, gathering grassroots support along the way. But even as victory appears within his grasp, his ragtag army begins disintegrating. The much-celebrated prince is forced to finish his life in humiliating exile—tormented by disappointment and forever clinging to the belief only he should rule England. Carefully researched, historian Carolly Erickson’s crisp prose reads as well as a thrilling novel with Steven Crossley’s superb narration.

The Bonnie Prince brought to life !
Really enjoyed this ! Had previously read Fitzroy MacLean’s excellent biography of the Young Pretender but Carolyn Erickson‘ book is just as good, and in some ways better, in that it reads like a novel. This is history for everyone - informative and entertaining. At no point did I tire of the narrative and I enjoyed Steven Crossley’s more than adequate performance. I will listen to it again and definitely recommend this Audible title. I shall be searching out more of Carolly Ericsson’s books.

Pretender to the ENGLISH throne!!!
Bonnie Prince Charlie had an eventful life that makes a good story however the book is spoiled for me by the author’s apparent ignorance of UK history. She keeps referring to the English crown and the UK as England. The union of the crowns was in 1603 and the Act of Union between Scotland with England in 1707. Both before the prince was born.

Fantastic portrayal of the Young and Old Pretender
Where does Bonnie Prince Charlie rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This was my first audiobook and it was a good first impression.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Bonnie Prince Charlie?
The decision not to retreat prior to the actual battle of Culloden Moor, Charles was advised to retreat based on basic battle tactics that did not suit his army. Prior to the battle they were tired from marching overnight plus the had no food for days.
What about Steven Crossley’s performance did you like?
Perfect narrating, great when he got into character, very believable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I listened whilst driving, out walking dogs and at work.
Any additional comments?
Looking forward to my next book :)

Outstanding book. Brilliantly well researched
I have just finished listening to this book and I am in total awe of the authors research abilities. It is beautifully written and is a rare history book that reads like a novel. I am Scottish and so learned all about the 45 rebellion at school, however there is so much more to the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites than I ever imagined. Most shocking to me was the capture and imprisonment of Flora McDonald. I had no idea this had occurred and it’s pleasing to know she was eventually released and became a celebrity in her own lifetime. Whether you are interested in Scottish history or are just looking for something exciting to listen to I recommend this book unconditionally!

Excellent narration & biography
Brilliantly read by Steven Crossley - this well known history of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' gives a real insight into
the man and the times.
It covers not just his personal history, but also the tragic story of the uprising, Culloden, and the stupidity of some of the
decisions taken. - Easy to say in hindsight. It also shows how very close he was to changing history. Absolutely fascinating - 11 hours that flew by. Thank you Steven for your narration.
