Summary

David Rogers was a doctor, handsome, charming and rich. He lived the lifestyle of the consultant - expensive clothes, top restaurants, exclusive clubs - until someone killed him in the hallway of his lovely million-plus-pound house. Was he killed for passion, professional jealousy, or plain old money?

Bill Slider and his firm are thrown into the mystery, but they soon discover that nothing is as it seems, for though David’s girlfriends are plenty, none of them can tell Slider anything about where he worked or exactly what it was he did.…

Another detective to follow.

I enjoy police procedurals and thrillers with strong characters: Roy Grace, Simon Serrailler, Maeve Kerrigan, Jane Tennison, Morse and so on. So it was great to discover a new one with a stack of books to go for.
DI Bill Slider and his team from Shepherds Bush are a great bunch. Slider is intelligent, thoughtful and actually works out the riddles of the initial murder and its victim, when all is definitely not as it seems. He's a solid detective, much cleverer than his superiors but passed over for propmotion as he fails to promote himself and his abilities. We also have an insight into the domestic life of Slider and Atherton, his sergeant.
This story is a clever web of pretence and lies, with the team having to crack the case as those linked to it have a nasty habit of ending up dead.
Good plot, well written and I thought the narration was OK, although sometimes it's a bit hard to differentiate between the characters, although it doesn't spoil the enjoyment. Unfortunately, many of the early books in the series are not available in Audible but it's easy to catch up, so not too much of a problem. I'll be returning for more.

Disappointed - narrator, not writer

I enjoy Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' novels. This was the first I have had as an audio book and have given up on it. Nothing to do with Cynthia - all to do with the narrator. The differentiation between the characters is poor and a police-person I took to be female from the voice is actually male. I have listened to the first few chapters several times to get to grips with the story, but have now abandoned. (If I had had a hard copy available, I would have read it thus far to try to sort the problem before resuming the audio, but I don't.) Too much effort is required to determine who is speaking so it ceases to be engaging. An expensive mistake.
