Summary

A heart-warming tale of Armageddon from one of the funniest, most original voices in comic fiction today.…

The third planet out from the star was blue, with green splodges. Dirt. Oh, the bomb thought. And then its courage, determination and nobility-of-spirit subroutines cut in, overriding everything else, adrenalizing its command functions and bypassing its cyberphrenetic nodes. Here goes, said the bomb to it. Calibrate navigational pod. Engage primary thrusters. Ready auxiliary drive.

It knew, in that moment, that its own doom was near; because it was giving itself orders, and it wasn’t putting in any ‘the’s. That was what you did, apparently, when the moment came. You could also turn on a flashing red beacon and a siren, but mercifully these were optional. Oh #//+! thought the bomb, and surged on towards Dirt like an avenging angel.

Critic reviews

"A clever, funny, tirelessly inventive, apocalyptic leg-hump of a book. Tom Holt may be the most imaginative satirist to land on our shores since Douglas Adams." (Christopher Moore)

More fun than you can shake a stick at!

I’ve listened to all Tom Holt available on Audible and this is my favourite by a mile. The world building is well thought out with enough detail to hold everything together but not getting bogged down in minute details. It seems pretty consistent within its own rules - something I feel is essential for fantasy novels as it allows you to immerse yourself in the setting no matter how outlandish it may seem at first.

The characters are well drawn and engaging and all have their own distinct personalities and motivations.

The plot moves along at a good pace and nothing seems to outstay its welcome or feel shoehorned in just as a plot device; the tale feels like it progresses smoothly.

The narration is also top notch with Ray Sawyer a perfect fit for Tom Holt’s style. He has a good range of voices and it is always clear which character you are hearing. He really does give the story that extra something. I’ve also read hard copy versions of other Tom Holt books and find I ‘hear’ them in Ray Sawyer’s voice in my head!

I highly recommend this book if you like a splash of fantasy and fun in your stories. It’s entertaining and enjoyable from start to finish.

A voyage of discovery

I have been a great admirer of Mr Holt's work for many years. This lives up to the great and clever writing that I have come to enjoy. I love looking out for the cleaver cameo's that he adds to his stories. There are not many books that I will stop mid sentence to ponder the reference within the story. It is a break that rarely disappoints. the smile of recognition spreads across my face when the penny drops. I hope that the penny topples quickly....they add a little seasoning to the overall story.

This is why I am a returning customer to Mr Holt's work. This story has a nice overall pattern, with nuggets of other stories interwoven. I would thoroughly recommend this book as a initial introduction to Mr Holt's work. From this, you will want to seek out more of Mr Holt's works.

Blonde bombshell

Another great Tom Holt book. This one is a little different to his others because instead of an added fantasy element it has an added alien element. Don’t let that put you off its utterly brilliant from start to finish. If you like your books, clever, fun, unusual and ever so slightly bonkers then this is for you.

smart and hilarious!

an awesome story that had me laughing out loud at the intelligent humour.
Tom Holt's unique mix of aliens space travel and household "pets" make it a great read/listen!

Another fantastic holt book

An utterly fabulous book, brilliantly read by ray sawyer! Intriguing, clever and full of laughs... If you like this you'll love 'Barking'. The only bad thing about the Tom holt books is that there are only 6 holt audiobooks available I've been waiting a year for more!!!

Not as good as Wells & Co trilogy

This was a good enough story but not quite in the same league as The Portable Door. It kind of lacks the humour, but Ray Sawyer, as ever, is a joy to listen to.
