Summary

Mysterious and gripping

This book starts slowly, building up the concrete details of Adina's life in hiding in Helsinki. It then gathers in force as her past experiences and her attempts to bring her attacker to justice are told in parallel. The Blaue Frau sections of the narrative stand in uncertain relation to the main story, but slowly mesh with it in the course of the book.

The portrait of Adina is wholly convincing, and the depiction of Helsinki in particular is atmospheric. Strubel's narration is straightforward, but well-paced, and the voices of the different characters come over well.

I'm listening now for the second time, and noticing more of how the themes are introduced and developed.
