Parm Sandhu
About this listen
One woman's story of policing and prejudice.
At the point of her retirement from the Metropolitan Police Service in 2019, Parm Sandhu was the most senior BAME woman in the capital's police force. She was also the only non-white female to have been promoted through the ranks from constable to chief superintendent in the Met's history.
In this enthralling memoir, Parm chronicles her journey from life in Birmingham as the fourth child of Punjab immigrants to the upper echelons of the Met. Forced into an abusive arranged marriage at aged 16, Parm escaped to London with her newborn son and joined the police. During her 30-year career, Parm worked in everything from crime prevention to counter-terrorism, as well as police corruption. However, Parm's time on the force was chequered throughout with incidents of racial and gender discrimination. Black and Blue tells her shocking story and of her quest for justice.

Interesting read by one who spoke out.
Fascinating insight into discrimination in the Metropolitan police force. Clearly set out by Parm, who is used to recording evidence. I would have liked to hear the other side of the story in some instances.
So good that someone of this rank has spoken out.

Truly Inspirational
As a former women police officer, who joined late 70’s, I think Parm must have been a very strong determined woman to cope with all that she did in her journey. I experienced discrimination and injustice in the police and think that Parm must have had incredible strength and determination to cope against all the discrimination she experienced to succeed in completing 30 yrs and achieving a high rank. This was a gripping story of a very strong lady.

A must read!
The story of the highest serving BAME police woman in the Met at the time of her retrial is a must read - it charts the progress of her family coming to England and the cultural differences she experienced- including a marriage she did not want, through her time at the Met where she faced both racism and sexism to the present day where she reflects on her career which involved a number of high profile cases - a fascinating insight into the modern police force

Heart breaking account
I'm proud to have served with a lot of amazing cops. WTF is wrong with the people that cause this kind of stress? Police departments up and down the land investigate complex and difficult issues on a daily basis and then carry out internal investigations like a rookie with a vendetta! it's about time a full professional investigation took place into these supposed leaks that are clearly motivated by racist, sexist attitudes. I'm amazed you made 10 years let alone 30!!!!

Black and blue discrimination
Excellent in-depth look at the life of a female of colour police officer.
Pulls a powerful punch with the inherent discrimination she faced in a day to day basis,
Only criticism is that the author who also narrates gave a poor performance, she was too softly spoken and at times monotone in delivery.
