About this listen
Through a series of essays, Sowell presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many policies and trends. He presents eye-opening insights into the development of the ghetto culture, a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks.
Black Rednecks and White Liberals is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell.

Rational, self controlled and accurate
Refreshing to have such clarity, laying bear the fallacies of the naïve, and disingenuousness of the knowing critics of our society

Insightful
I came to this without knowing what to expect on a recommendation, indeed the title worried me a little. That said this is a hugely insightful book that has caused me to reconsider much of what I thought I knew.

He says the unsayable
A clear, closely argued and factually supported critique of the “usual” arguments cited as explanations for under- performance among blacks in America.

A vivid and humane contradiction of modern efforts to rewrite history
A wonderfully approachable work on the modern abuses of history to satisfy transient political means. It is both excoriating of modern political movements and yet convincingly universalising. Anyone convinced by identity or grievance politics would be wise to read it.

For those interested in modern race relations.
A must read for anyone interested in understanding the reasons behind the economic and social lag of certain communities and why other groups excelled. Having a better understanding of why things are the way they are allows us to take substantive steps to improve ourselves and society as a whole.

An absolutely fascinating look at American and European history in relation to slavery and its impact on western society and values today.

Must Read
I learned a lot from this book which surprised me. Sowell ranges far from African and periphery British cultures to those of middle men and various other minorities.
He makes a strong case for culture being a stronger determinant than genetics.

Engaging and Informative
I've wanted to read something by Thomas Sowell ever since I read a somewhat negative review of Intellectuals and Society in the LSE review of books (remember?). Haven't actually read anything yet, but listening to this has been brilliant. If only more "oppressed" peoples would pay attention to his wisdom.
