Coming of age in the world of Mer

I loved this book. Great world building, intrigue, action, adventure with genuine authentic characters and relatable teenage angst. Great narration by Ashley Music brings that extra dimension of pleasure to this story.

Spoiler alert!

Serina is a young Mer whose blond hair has yet to change colour. A mer's hair colour usually changes well before their thirteenth year, at the latest. The colour designates their skills and future. Serina dreams of becoming a red haired warrior, a dolphin rider. But at 12 years her hair is still blond. Serina is subject to bullying and discrimination. Plagued by self doubts and insecurities, Serina pushes herself to prove that she is as capable as her class mates despite her loathed hair colour.

To escape from scrutiny and censure, it is Serina's habit to swim away from the Isle and to walk in peace and solitude on a pebbly mainland beach. It is here that she rescues a human from drowning in a mer trap. Humans are the feared, untrustworthy and dangerous enemy. Yet this young human male piques Serina's interest. He doesn't seem dangerous and even grateful for his rescue.

The mer people and the humans have had an uneasy truce, brokered by the magic Pearls of An'dai. One of the pearls, thought by many to be a fable, is stolen from the King of the Mer by the Cecaelia, octopus like mer servants of the evil Sea Hag and enemy to both Humans and Mer.

These are the threads of a great fantasy suitable for YA - bullied at school, illegal contact with humans and evil army converging on the Mer kingdom.

An excellent story

An excellent story, Trevor Darby has built an impressive world, a great lead character with typical teenage problems plus a tail. Engrossing storyline. Aimed at young teens to hit the mark perfectly. Narration is quite superb.

Great book for all ages

I received a free audio copy of this book directly from the author for an honest review.

I’ve really enjoyed this story, the world building is fantastic and well done and certainly good for all ages. I definitely would of loved this book as a young teenager and Serina is very much like a normal teenager (12 year old). She’s very relatable and although young which normally I do struggle with these days character wise I truly loved Serina and this story though I have marked down one star as if I heard about her hair one more time I was going to scream. 😂🙈 Oh to be a teenager again and have such issues... but the repetition of that did drive me a little crazy. I definitely will look out for the next book 😊
