About this listen

Past midnight, a horribly mutilated body is found on a road in Portsmouth. The victim has been killed in a hit-and-run. On the evidence, DI Faraday’s latest case seems cut and dried; the dead man had been responsible for the bullying and murder of a boy from his estate.

Bazza Mackenzie, the city’s drug lord, has a job for ex-cop Paul Winter. His daughter is having an affair with a high-ranking policeman and he wants Winter to investigate.

And so Winter must establish the facts and talk some sense into both parties before someone gets hurt. But there’s a world of deeper hurt that no-one expected, coming out of the darkness surrounding the twin investigations.

Great Book

I loved this book. I've read others in the series, and liked them, but the reader here (Tim Pepper) added so much to the story that it really brought it to life.

Very enjoyable

Its just a shame that Audible have not got more of the Joe Fraraday series to download. If you like your modern dective thrillers to have a gritty realism, a supurb cast of colourful characters and a good story line to keep you hooked then look no futher a really enjoyable listen. If you like Rebus, Morse, Frost then you will be pleased with another addition to the modern detective. The narrator Tim Pepper is perfect for creating the ambience and has a wide range of voices that make the whole experience a treat.

Disappointing

Other reviews convinced me to try this book, but it is not a patch on the Rebus stories of Ian Rankin. Too much emphasis in the first chapters of how well Portsmouth football club were doing - not interesting if you are not a Pompey fan and far too parochial. I lost track of half the characters in the first thirty minutes and am hoping Audible will give me a credit for this very disappointing book.
