Summary

They hate everything about each other, so why do they harmonize so well?

Isaiah Nettles wants a chance. A chance to help his family.

The prestigious Gage Scholarship will secure his future. He needs this. The competition might be hot, but Darren Gage is a golden child. No way will Isaiah let an entitled rich kid be handed the award.

But what if Darren is more than an entitled rich kid?

Darren Gage wants to be seen. Seen as more than just his name.

The Gage Scholarship will let him shine. He needs this. Sure, Isaiah is insanely sexy - and right to stand up for himself - but he is the competition.

No way will Darren let just anyone take his legacy.

But what if Isaiah isn’t just anyone?

Better Have Heart is an enemies-to-lovers slow-burn M/M romance with an HEA. This new-adult college opposites-attract rich-boy/poor-boy novel can be listened to as a stand-alone.

Definitely Has All The Heart

Better Have Heart is the second book in the Harrison Campus series. It can easily be read as a standalone, although it was fun to see familiar faces from the first book. This book is set in the contemporary world with a college setting.

Darren Gage is the rich boy who just wants his family’s approval. Isaiah Nettles is the working class guy who just wants to make ends meet for his family. Both men figure the best way to get what they want is to become the Gage Scholar, a prestigious position which comes with a guaranteed job and stipend. To win the scholarship, both Darren and Isaiah will have to compete against each other. Except, their competition quickly turns into something more romantic as they both begin to fall for each other.

This was an adorable book that had me completely enthralled. I adored Darren and Isaiah and loved that they became a couple –they are perfect together. There were a lot of obstacles the two men had to overcome, but even with the angst, the book never lost its sweetness. I also really liked that these two men really communicated with each other and misunderstandings did not blow up into something dramatic and beyond repair. It’s always refreshing to see real communication between characters.

Nick J. Russo narrated this audiobook like he did for the first book. Nick was a wonderfully choice for this series. He has a lovely voice that captured the characters perfectly. I really enjoyed his performance and found the audiobook experience really delightful and engaging. The audiobook was well produced which made for an overall terrific audio and storytelling experience.

Good story with a great performance

I enjoyed the set up for this book where we have two guys competing for a scholarship, both for very valid reasons. Initially, we are set up to feel for the underdog and dislike the rich, entitled character, Darren, but both we and Isaiah have made assumptions about him that are not true. I really like the way both characters were fleshed out, the music and academic atmosphere woven into the story and the rate at which they moved from "enemies" to friends to lovers. Nick J. Russo does a superb job of voicing all the characters and especially helping us see that Darren isn't the stuck up, snob we initially imagine.

A book to get invested in

I found this book to be better than it’s predecessor. The story between Darren and Isaiah is riveting and keeps the reader in the feel of the storyline. The narration is delightful and keeps the listener engaged.

amazing!

I loved the first book in the series and I really really loved this second book. The main two characters were wonderful and I loved the plot and how it was resolved. Really great book. Sweet and emotional and sexy. I loved every word and I thought that the narrator did a great job with the voices. I highly recommend it.

slow burn

this is a slow burn story but it was an amazing story. Chapter 22/23 requires tissues because if you don't tear up and let those tears fall, I am not sure you have a heart. Bring on more for this series!!!!

Nick J. Russo did a great job with this!

I listened to this audiobook back in September 2020 and totally forgot to post my review here. (hangs head) I loved Better Have Heart when I read it back in July 2020 and now I love it even more after listening to Nick J. Russo's performance. Often when I listen to a book that I've already read (especially if it hasn't been long since I read it), I don't pay super close attention to the audiobook because I already know the story. That wasn't the case with Better Have Heart. Nick's voice captured and held my attention from beginning to end.

Below is what I wrote when I reviewed the book back in July.

I loved this so much!

Boy did this book hit me right in all the feels. I don't know what there is about New Adult romance that I like it so much, but I really do love them. Better Have Heart really got to me in several places but especially when both guys gave up something they wanted so the other could have it, but they didn't tell each other.

Darren and Isaiah start out as competitors, both after the same prestigious Gage Scholarship. Darren wants it because it is his family legacy and Isaiah needs it because it will help his family by securing his future with the opportunities it will bring him after graduation.

It doesn't take long for the attraction they feel for each other to help them overcome the rocky beginning they had when they first met. Unfortunately, someone wants to prevent Isaiah from having a fair chance to win the scholarship. If I had one criticism of the story it's that we didn't get to find out what happened to the person trying to keep Isaiah from having that chance. Still, this wasn't enough to prevent me from giving it 5 well-deserved stars.

My heart hurt so much for Darren and his relationship with his father; I just wanted to wrap him up and hug him and try and take away some of the hurt. And Isaiah… he is such a sweetheart. He sacrifices a lot to try and help his mom and his brother and sister.

I truly could not put this book down once I started reading it and I can't wait to read the next one in this series.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

wow! a passionate and powerful story

I love a good enemies to lovers story and this one is full of passion, heart, emotions and so much chemistry!

I had a couple of moments where I was a little lost as to some of the backstory as I hadn't read book 1 but there was no doubt that these two had intense chemistry. I got a general jist of their recent pasts but was "lost" to the "event" and it's related characters but now I really want to read book 1 and find out more 😉

I really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would and while I love enemies to lovers I'm not the biggest fan of slow burn but this one is fantastic! I could feel the zing from the start and loved the give and take and push and pull between these two. I also liked the honesty of Darren and his relationship with his Dad.

I enjoyed this one immensely and look forward to more from this awesome duo!

Brilliant addition

Andy Gallo and Anyta Sunday did a super job in creating a follow-up to Better Be Sure. It was a true pleasure to get to know most of the characters, there was one that I just wanted to strangle. Although is can be listen to as a stand-alone, for best result start with the 1st book. Nick J Russo was amazing with the narration, one of my favorite narrators. A series that is a must to follow.

Excellent!

I really enjoyed the story! The characters were amusing and creative. The story line was unique and interesting. The characters had a strong connection by the end and their chemistry was palpable from the start. They had their curious quirks and their deep stories that made them feel very real and authentic .

The narration was excellent! Russo did another great job with this piece. I have been enjoying him a lot lately and look forward to more narrations by him.
