Summary

Life is simple in Ben's small town until an attack brings the arrival of exciting strangers straight out of a story. Before Ben understands what is happening, he embarks on a dangerous journey to help his friends. A mage, demons, thieves, and assassins are just a few of the perils he will face while trying to make it to safety. But things aren't always what they seem, and safety is a fragile concept when the destructive behaviors of the powerful are exercised unchecked. In Ben's world - like our own - politics, the economy, and military might create a system to keep the elite in power at the expense of the common man. As the series unfolds and Ben's knowledge and skills grow, he will have to decide if he wants to live within the system, flee from it, or break it.

An excellent series to listen to

I began this series here, with book 1, partially as it was a freebie in the audible plus catalogue, had good if few reviews & sounded interesting. I was definitely hooked & whilst there are some weaker points (mainly predictability) it was an easy listen, the narrator did a very good job & the plot moved along better than I expected (I was needlessly concerned that there were similar situations in each book) it was varied enough to keep me interested & overall I felt it was time well spent. I recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a bit of supernatural, good vs evil & a story where the underdog may just win... but then again, they may not but reach a sustainable situation, bit leaves the door open for future books (trying not to have any spoilers!)

good world building felt genuine, protagonist is relateble and well rounded and the book leaves off with a nice transition towards the 2nd book

Truly terrible

After listening to Cartographer I thought I'd give another A. C. Cobble work a go. I don't know what happened. This series feels like it was written by a 10 year old. The characters are so under developed, unbelievable and flat. The story could work but not without a full rewrite. Not one to recommend.
