Summary
Best-selling authors David and Leigh Eddings welcome fans back to the time before the Belgariad and the Malloreon series. Join them as they chronicle that fateful conflict between two mortally opposed Destinies, in a monumental war of men and kings and gods.
When the world was young and Gods still walked among their mortal children, a headstrong orphan boy set out to explore the world. Thus began the extraordinary adventures that would mold that youthful vagabond into a man and the man into the finely honed instrument of Prophecy known to all the world as Belgarath the Sorcerer.
Then came the dark day when the Dark God Torak split the world asunder, and the God Aldur and his disciples began their monumental labor to set Destiny aright. Foremost among their number was Belgarath. His ceaseless devotion was foredoomed to cost him that which he held most dear—even as his loyal service would extend through echoing centuries of loss, of struggle, and of ultimate triumph.

Listen to 1-5 first
Great audio books series but this should be number 6 not 0 as it contain spoilers about the main series so if you're going to read or listen to the books do this one at the end , great books brilliantly narrated.

As far as prequels goes, not too bad
As always with prequels you loose a lot of the tension cause you know who will make it and who won’t. This one is a bit of a double edge sword cause it takes place over several thousand years, so most people won’t stick around to the end or the original series, giving stories within the story potential to still be interesting, but it’s cramming a lot of information into a relatively short (for the time span it covers) book, and doesn’t stay too long in any one time. Several key events have also been described to some extent in the main series, but it still offered some quite interesting passages. Read this for the first time when I was 10, 15 year ago now. Happy to have done it again, but glad I could go the audio book route, cause I’m not sure I could have managed traditional reading to the end. Props to Cameron Bierly who did the entire book in Belgarath’s voice, as it is a first person retelling. Sad to see he’s not reading the last book in the series, Polgara the Sorceress. I wasn’t sure about his performance in the early books, but 11 books later his voice has grown on me, though seeing as Polgaras book is a first person story told by a woman it makes sense they’d get a female narrator to read it.

Great story and amazing performance
I'm completely new to Eddings' Belgariad, so I didn't catch the mispronunciations others have mentioned, but even if I did, they would have been dwarfed by Cameron Beierle's splendid performance. For me he was the perfect choice for vocalizing Belgarath, and I'm pretty sure that his voice will be the one echoing in my head every time I pick up a physical copy. Both the story and Eddings' style are captivating, and the whole book had a unique atmosphere, which I've found very few authors can achieve. The only negative aspect of the book that I can think of - given the style in which it was written - , is its length. Sometimes, when the story jumped decades/centuries, I've felt like reading The Silmarillion - which I also liked very much, but which was a bit too condensed in my opinion -, so I had to consume it in chunks. To summarize my experience: I had a great time here, both writing and storytelling were splendid. I can only recommend this audio book.

excellent book
I loved every moment of this story with all the characters, the narrator had no difficulties with acting out their voices and personalities. I was completely thrown into their lives and I'm missing them already.
