About this listen
In "Behind the Curtain," the fate of civilization is precariously balanced.
Tucked away in a secret CIA bunker, Terry Ferrow, a genius in Artificial Intelligence, has dedicated decades to the "Bright Futures Project." His creation, an advanced AI neural brain chip, was meant to change the world for the better.
However, as Terry delved into his groundbreaking work, the world above descended into chaos. Society became trapped in a web of mass surveillance, its freedom slipping away under the watch of a corrupt government. These "Enlightened Ones" twisted Terry's invention into a tool of oppression.
The stakes couldn't be higher as Terry squares off against the monstrous reality his brain chip spawned. Can he break the shackles of his own making and free humanity from the jaws of a technological nightmare? Or will he be consumed by the very beast he unleashed?
Prepare for a gripping tale as Terry Ferrow battles to dismantle the chains forged by his creation. "Behind the Curtain" is not just a story about redemption; it's an epic narrative of a man fighting to save a world on the edge. Watch as humanity teeters on the brink in this pulse-pounding saga, where the outcome will determine the very soul of civilization.

A gritty and ‘underground’ dystopian book
Behind the Curtain is the first in Maxwell Stegner’s dystopian series. I listened to this one and have to say the narration was perfect for the tone and pacing of the story. The story itself is engaging and fast paced, giving a feel of someone caught up in the mass switch from the society of today to one under the constant surveillance and control of a corrupt and determined government. The whole book has that gritty ‘underground’ feel that draws you into the world, and a sense of the inherent danger that comes with the hybridisation of AI and humanity. There are moments that lack tension, or where more depth would have helped the reader/listener connect with events, but overall, this was a great thriller and comes recommended.
