Summary

Josh Holyfield is a combat veteran with over 15 years of experience deploying and supporting the US Army and Special Operations. Josh used health fitness to help him overcome the mental and emotional challenges of serving in the military during combat deployments and then transitioning from that career to becoming a civilian.

For over a decade after his military service, he worked as a federal contractor and federal employee serving global SOF operations, and in 2019, he started The Josh Holyfield Project. Since starting, he's helped over 40,000 men with the tools and resources needed to transform their bodies and minds using techniques that focus on creating sustainable habits rather than short-term results. In early 2021, he walked away from his federal position to help men full-time by offering programming and coaching to men worldwide.

This book serves as a guide for men who are tired of being tired and are looking for the tools they need to step back into their power as masculine leaders, rebuid their confidence, and defeat the war against mediocrity.

Had me fooled!

So first of all, credit where it’s due. Anyone that overcomes adversity, outperforms their circumstances, consistently practices self discipline, improves lives and inspires change for the “good”is noteworthy. Sound like he’s carved out a nice life for himself after all that hardship and failure. So well done Mr Holyfield. Respect!

Second, unfortunately, what started out (for me) as a no b.s, kick up the backside, stop f****ing around and be the whatever it is you’ve envisioned or believe you can be, slowly descended into unapologetic masculine drivel rooted in ignorance, thinly veiled conspiracy theory and blatant bigotry.

Experienced truth isn’t necessarily universal truth. I think this content would have been more powerful if the author steered well clear of the latter. The science he quotes or refers to in places is/are valid but the conclusions are misguided or have limited applications. He name drops David Goggins, Mike Tyson and other notable personalities and cites some socio-demographic stats to anchor some of his points which is fair enough but the essence of his message(s), in my opinion fails to deliver as his conservative, over-indulged masculinity, bigotry and masked self-congratulatory themes obscure what at the core, I found are some really good solid principles to curate and adopt what works. Hence the three stars.

To be fair, he does lay out his target audience early on, which loosely translates to able-bodied conservative white American male. By then, you’ve paid so no refunds if you’re marginalized. I mean, how as a man, are you telling other men about what a woman wants? How do you write a self help book and callously ignored the dynamics that allowed you to earn your success while denying others that no doubt started with less than you, worked harder than you, suffered more and lost more? This is the challenge with the delta that exists between experienced truth and universal truth.

Not knocking your hustle brother, just some things in there that severely detract from the nuggets.
