When the legendary comedian Barry Cryer died in January 2022, there was a vast outpouring of grief, appreciation and anecdotes – from the general public and fellow comics alike. Now, his son, Bob, is doing what Barry’s humility did not allow: revealing the story of the man behind the jokes.
This book is an ode both to Barry’s incredible life and to the lessons he so generously imparted on the art of comedy during his sixty-year career. Stretching from the music halls of the fifties, via working alongside everyone from Morecambe and Wise to Kenny Everett and David Frost, and into more recent times as a stalwart of Radio 4’s long-running I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, where he worked with Rob Brydon and David Mitchell among many others, this book is a hugely entertaining insight into the life of a true comedy legend. Bob also shares a range of exclusive material unique to the Cryer family – including family photos, memorabilia, oral recordings, interviews with friends and colleagues (among them Michael Palin and Eric Idle) – as well as Bob’s own personal reflections on living and working with a comedy icon.

A wonderful celebration of Baz
Bob Cryer has written a glorious tribute to his dad who was a legend of comedy in every single way. Didn’t want it to end and made me cry a number of times, sometimes with laughter 😆 😭

Nice gentle listen
I knew Barry Cryer had written for, and with, many people, but until I read this I had no idea just how many. Amazing. A very entertaining read, and well-narrated, plus you get a smattering of free jokes to use on your friends and family. My only slight quibble was the author’s need (seemingly very few books escape this now) to make us aware periodically that he has thoroughly contemporary ‘right on’ politics…it got a bit tiresome after a while, as the political comments didn’t really seem particularly relevant to BC’s life - more just shoehorned in for the sake of letting us know the author’s views.

Simply wonderful!!
First of all, I was a bit confused… Is it said in the description narrated by Barry Cryer… Within a few seconds I realised it was his son, which gave me a little chuckle. This book is a wonderful, heartwarming tribute to a wonderful wit singer songwriter scriptwriter joke teller and a wonderful storyteller. This book tries to uncover what made Barry Cryer such a great giant in the entertainment industry right up until his death. His son draws on family knowledge, extensive archive interviews a trove of family memorabilia to piece together journey from humble beginnings to working with the greats, Tommy Cooper, to Ronnie's and many more.
What seems to run through this book throughout is the unbelievable humility that Barry Cryer maintained throughout his life, whether it be on the stage or behind-the-scenes. This seemed to me to be always a politeness and those around him almost reverent in his company.
The narration is excellent and is interspersed with telephone conversations with people like Eric idle to name a few. This is a wonderful book about a man who took a risk and it paid off and it continued to pay for many decades. Thank you Mr Cryer for the years of laughter and as you always used to say, "same time tomorrow?"
