Emotional story that really works for me

I have to admit I avoided this book for ages because I really disliked the synopsis. The idea of the h searching on the internet for the H because she liked his singing, and then turning up on his doorstep was all a bit "stalkerish" for me. But somehow it just really works.

Our h has meandered through life trying to avoid conflict and confrontation for the sake of a peaceful life. She suddenly finds herself being unjustly fired from a job she actually hated, and dumped by a boyfriend who suddenly balked at the idea of marriage after seven years living together. She turns up on the doorstep of our H, who, after the tragic death of his daughter, has gone into a sort of long term perpetual mourning. He is eating, sleeping, breathing, but pretty much emotionally dead inside.

Their unexpected attraction to each other forces them both to evaluate how they are living. Our heroine realises pretty quickly that this guy is something worth fighting for, but our H is just so used to beating himself up he cannot face accepting any happiness back into his life. Although he acts like a real jerk at times, we are given parts of the story from his POV so can understand the reasons behind what he does. There is almost a black humour in how he manages to dig himself into a hole sometimes and then makes things even worse in his panicked attempts to backtrack. And throughout this our heroine is definitely no doormat. She fights for what she wants but is realistic to know that at some stage she may have to give up and get on with her own life without him.

All in all it makes a really emotional and absorbing story which involved a lovely cast of supporting characters. I found myself enjoying listening to this story (with excellent narration) so much I was actually turning it off so that it would last longer before I got to the end! The H does not accept the idea of a relationship until the very end of the story and I love the fact that this makes the relationship between the two of them seem even stronger. You get the idea that both these characters will never forget how lucky they are to have found each other.
