About this listen

Presented as an Advent calendar-styled book, 'The Call of Mektoub' invites you to cosy up by the Christmas tree, toast your toes by the fire, and escape to a magical world of wonder. It's not just a story for children, but for everyone young at heart! Isn't it about time that mothers had a Christmas adventure for a change? Too often we find parents are pushed aside while children have all the fun, but not in this tale!

Emma and her daughter Lucy are the keepers of an old book from 1935, which features a rather special polar bear named 'Mektoub', meaning 'Destiny'. They find themselves called upon by a whimsical Jack Frost and his shy fairy companion, Tweeny Bunting, who are also characters from the old story, and very different from their modern-day counterparts. Together, they must embark on an adventure that tests their courage and determination, revealing their kindness, compassion, and willingness to endorse the tenet that anything is possible if you believe...

Not to be left out, Lucy's father receives his share of entertaining attention courtesy of a mysterious old gentleman whose identity is only revealed in the penultimate chapter. It is this character who opens the story in the audiobook version, taking us back to a small Devonshire village in 1943, where the old book finds its way into the hands of two sisters, to be loved and treasured for the generations of mothers and daughters that follow.

Read the eBook and listen to the audiobook simultaneously – with full character cast, music and sound effects – for a heartwarming countdown to Christmas!
