Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Four gripping stories from the Old Bailey that force us to consider: What is justice? Do our legal courts dispense it? Has our judicial process improved, for the victims, the accused and for society? And what more must be done to ensure genuine justice is carried out in future?

Following on the heels of her bestseller Unlawful Killings, Old Bailey judge Wendy Joseph KC skilfully reconstructs courtroom dramas affecting society’s most vulnerable, drawing on her many years’ experience as a murder trial judge, and asking the key questions of the institutions tasked to deliver what is right and fair.

From the trial of a child charged with disposing of dismembered body parts, to the woman accused of killing her own husband, Joseph is utterly compelling as she sets out how our justice system works. But, as she compares these modern courtroom tales with eerily similar cases and miscarriages of justice from years ago, might the most chilling story of all be that the lessons of the past have yet to be learned?

Incisive, masterfully crafted, Rough Justice illuminates the struggles of any one of us caught up in our legal system – but particularly the marginalized and the easily exploited – and grapples with the concept of ‘justice for all’ so that we might demand better.

Outstanding

Her honourable judge Wendy Joseph's second book, I heard her on women's hour last week and quickly pre-ordered as her last book was such a fantastic read, again I have binged listened to this while at work, and she has not disappointed. Eloquent in her delivery, mindful of keeping real life trials anonymous by tweaking and changing details, but has done this so brilliantly you feel you are sat in the old Bailey watching these trials. She writes with such humour without ever lowering the tone or losing respect for the victims or defendants. You can tell she has seen some characters in her time and having heard her real voice, the narrator has really got it spot on. The cases are shocking and heartbreaking and although I personally think the justice system is a bit outdated, I mean lady justice herself is carrying a bladed article on top of the old Bailey......just love her, I hope book 3 is in the pipeline

Couldn’t stop listening!

I loved this book just as much as her first book Unlawful Killings. A fascinating insight in to the law and how it plays out in court. Would 100% recommend both books.

Thought provoking

It’s very easy to dismiss this type of book, it has nothing to do with me, I’m not part of this bureaucracy. It is very much to do with any of us, we all of us could find ourselves as a witness or jury member or through some other way involved in the legal wheels. This book is fascinating, I’ve listened to both her books and couldn’t put them down. Highly recommend.

Compassion for the ordinary by a high-flyer!

Impressed with her continued coming back to the idea of true justice not only for the alleged victim but for the allegedly guilty party in an age where guilt is often accepted on hearing a few untested soundbites.

Clarity and compassion

This has been a thorough pleasure to listen to and such an important area of interest to me
I so appreciate the compassion and wisdom of this author and look forward to reading her other works
I have learned more from Rough Justice about the complexities of the judges role and
the nuances between counsel than any professional training has achieved
