About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king - while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son - in this Norse-inspired fantasy romance from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband's back.

Freya's dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region's jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: she possesses a drop of a goddess's blood, which gives her magic capable of repelling any attack. A magic that was foretold would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath a king-the one who controls the shield maiden's fate.

Believing he's destined to rule Skaland, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders his son, Bjorn, to protect Freya from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. Except the greatest test of all may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

great narration

I really enjoyed the story though I got a bit impatient as certain plot points were very obviously foreshadowed early on, but then drawn out until the end of the book. Hands down what made this was the narrator. She was amazing.
it really brought everything to life allowed you to get wrapped up in the story and mythology.

It was alright. Narration saved it

I wasn’t as captivated as I wish I could have been. The narrator was great but the middle part of the story I just wasn’t invested in.

Great narration

This is a very enjoyable, easy to follow romantic fantasy story - it’s imaginative and different in terms of its setting. The plot may be a bit predictable in places, but very little to dislike about it. I liked the main character, the lead male character was also good and they had great banter and jokes between them. I like this author, and if you have read and enjoyed her other books you will like this one for sure.
Special mention to the narrator, because this has to be one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to; she has a lovely voice, authentic sounding considering the setting, and well acted for all the different characters. I am glad I used a credit on this one because I know I will happily re-listen to it in future.

When's book 2 out

brilliantly paced book . the narrator did a fantastic job the action was superb and the main character Freya was amazing but not perfect and really evolved as the story went on .
I'm in a serious book hangover at the moment after this book .I'll definitely be buying a hard copy for my library

I don’t know that a feel about this book

This book had an interesting story and a romance worth following but it felt at the same time lacking. Many things was obvious and some thing of the story lines felt like the some as other books I have read, not something new. So I don’t know how to really fell about this book it was good in some areas and bad in others. But the the story moving forward was interesting enough for me to want to read more so maybe that is saying some about my thought about this book.

A viking saga

I absolutely loved this viking saga story. The book has a really good pace and is packed with interesting characters and settings. The book is clearly very well researched and I loved the references to the viking religion and mythology. I enjoyed the writing style and loved the banter between the two protagonists. The audiobook was performed very well and added to a great story.

I liked the narrator. She did a great job

It was a good story. Not excellent but good. I could tell where this is going from afar and to be honest, the male lead betraying the heroine’s trust has now became a cliche. Everyone does it and there is nothing refreshing. It’s the same old story as any other popular book but with vikings. The Viking’s were a nice touch though but the plot could have been better. I will still read book 2 because of the author
