About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Shaun Pinner was a retired and decorated British soldier, living a peaceful and happy life in Mariupol with his Ukrainian family.

What follows is the true story of his six months spent imprisoned in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

After the horrors of frontline fighting, Shaun had to survive his capture by the Russian soldiers, and his removal to a Black Site - an off-the-grid prison untethered to human rights conventions - where he was subjected to a campaign of torture by Putin's secret police.

It saw him shocked with electricity, stabbed, beaten, and almost starved to death, all while trying to maintain his morale with the other POWs.

Shaun tells a story that is both an unstoppable record of the fierceness of the fighting and a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit.

What a story!

Scary, inspirational and educational at once.

Fascinating story which contains so many details that cannot be imagined without a first person storytelling.

Stuff of nightmares and heroes

An amazing account of one man’s fight to stay alive through horrendous incarceration. At times harrowing but very insightful and confirms what most of us think of Russia. God bless you Sean, may you live the rest of your life out in peace with your inspirational wife. Lived. Fought. Survived.

Exceed my expectations.

This is one of the most inspiring and harrowing war books I've ever listened to. What makes it more haunting is that this story has happened only "yesterday" ,even though it's like listening to a story from 1944. the Sadly, Russians have not changed their attitude towards POWs for the last 100 years.

Respect to a fellow Viking

Very gripping & compelling read, almost felt I was in the room with Shaun. The level of calmness, professionalism and good old “F*ck You” British Army mentality spills out from the pages along with that uncanny ability to make light & laughter even in the worst of situations. Having completed the same SERE training as Shaun in the same battalion “Vikings” at the same time, never in my wildest dreams would I ever won’t to have to put it into practice at age 50yrs. Total RESPECT, great read.

Interesting Book

Good book, what makes it more authentic is how the writer narrates it, so he's telling he's own story. Gives interesting but unsurprising account of how the Russian military behaves in war and riddle with corruption and lies its command & political structure is.

fascinating!

I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read/listen to how people are being treated by Putin's forces in Ukraine. Fascinating account by Shaun of his time defending Mariupol and the harrowing details of his capture and tortures.
