About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
In the wake of his parents' tragic deaths in a house fire, fourteen-year-old Richard Elauved has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle in the remote, insular town of Ballantyne.
Richard quickly earns a reputation as an outcast, and when a classmate named Tom goes missing, everyone suspects the angry new boy is responsible for his disappearance. No one believes him when he says the telephone booth out by the edge of the woods sucked Tom into the receiver like something out of a horror movie. No one, that is, except Karen, a beguiling fellow outsider who encourages Richard to pursue clues the police refuse to investigate. He traces the number that Tom prank called from the phone booth to an abandoned house in the Black Mirror Wood. There he catches a glimpse of a terrifying face in the window. And then the voices begin to whisper in his ear...
You know who I am. She's going to burn. The one you love is going to burn. There's not a thing you can do about it.
When another classmate disappears, Richard must find a way to prove his innocence - and preserve his sanity - as he grapples with the dark magic that is possessing Ballantyne and pursuing his destruction.
Then again, Richard may not be the most reliable narrator of his own story.

Oh dear
I tried to persevere with this book, but I gave up (which is something I never do). Sorry Jo this was clearly meant for a completely different audience than your Harry Hole books. Maybe should be aimed at teenagers?

What was this!!?
Very disappointed in this.
I listened to the end, hoping that something would hold, but sadly it didn’t.
Perhaps the book preview should have said “this is nothing like previous books!!”

Not the normal Nesbo read
This is a strange book. I just managed to stay with it but it was not as enjoyable as any of of the many previous books I have read by this author.

It's a corny Horror / Thriller!
So many 1-star reviews of this title because it "isn't like Nesbo's other books"... that doesn't make it a bad book!! it's certainly not a 1-star Horror book. The Night House gave massive 90s S. King vibes for me. It's a little bit corny, sightly far fetched, good old school "what happened one summer" style Horror! The narration is great, the length of the book is about right, this book doesn't deserve to be slammed just for not being something it didn't pretend to be

I can’t believe this was written by Jo Nesbo
Boring, dull, lacking effort and repetitive, probably the worst audio book I’ve ever listened to. The narration by Edward Bourne is so dull and annoying. I can’t believe this book was written by Jo Nesbo. Save yourself the time, money and pain and skip reading and especially skip listening to this audiobook. Had I not been out of credits or been able to have returned this book I definitely believe I’d have cast this into a bin after twenty minutes. Utter garbage.

Enjoyable
I’ve not listened to a Jo Nesbo book before which is maybe why I’ve enjoyed it more than some other of these reviews. But I throughly enjoyed it, it kept me interested and intrigued to where the story will lead; a little predictable towards the end but still a decent story, will likely listen to more of this author

I didn’t like it at all
It was like reading three entirely different books in one, a very confused plot. It started off with a lot of promise and then went downhill fast
