Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Aiden Aslin joined the Ukrainian marines in 2018, compelled to defend his adopted homeland from the growing threat of Russian invasion. In February 2022, as Russia mounted a full-scale offensive, Aiden and his unit were stationed at the frontline at Mariupol.

Pinned down at a Mariupol steelworks, after a month-long siege and running out of supplies, Aiden was part of the mass surrender of over a thousand Ukrainian troops, in April 2022. Then his real ordeal began.

Singled out for his British passport, Aiden was interrogated, tortured, stabbed, turned into a propaganda zombie, tried by a kangaroo court and then sentenced to death. A victim of a catalogue of abuses of international law, Aiden struggled to cling on to any hope of survival. Certain that he was going to be executed, he was eventually freed in a prisoner exchange and permitted to return home.

In Putin's Prisoner, Aiden will tell the full, harrowing story of his time fighting in Putin's war, of his six months in Russian captivity, and of his hardened resolve to defend the freedoms of the people of Ukraine.

I felt that it was touching the surface of the horror

I listened to the book at full speed. at times it painted a vision of the horror that is Ukraines war. The author has incredible courage to write this. Indeed this will mean one day he could be killed in an unfortunate accident in the shower then falling out the window. I just hope that maybe after time, after the Hague Aidien is able to face the nightmare and bring it to life in high definition, holding nothing back and collectively finding the torturer's who hit with the battons and the sham "rulers" in the temporary occupied territories and right up through the defence ministry and up to the president of the most lawles state on the globe. So Aiden staying strong and get ready.

A must listen to . . .

. . . especially those arguing that russia is somehow are not to blame, that are somehow the good guys.

What Aiden went through, all he suffered at the hands of russians, makes this a really tough listen but it's essential, especially with all the misinformation that russia is putting out there, and is being transmitted in the west by their agents, who are often in position of power (especially in the US).

Aidan is a brave person, and I admire his sense of morality. I do wish him and his family well.

It’s essential listening if you wish to understand the tragedy that has befallen Ukraine. Very informative about the background of it all. A difficult listen but the dark humour spurs you on.

What a strong man Aiden is

I enjoyed the book, true stories appeal to me. I’m familiar with these prison torture tactics, I was born & raised in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. I would really like to introduce Aiden to Rusty Labuschagne (his book - Beating Chains)

Amazing Book, Great but hard listen

I followed Aiden’s story from just before his capture to his release but without the knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes. Truly horrific, but so glad he lived to tell his story on behalf of those who are still going through that horror today.

Fantastic listen

Great read. a good insight into the horrors and evils committed by Russia during their illegal invasion. it's extremely frightening to think if they treated a prisoner of value to them like this, how poor Ukranian soldiers are treated for the crime of defending their own country against an aggressor.
