Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The exhilarating and startlingly honest autobiography of the living legend.
The long-awaited memoir by the icon of stage, screen and music. This audiobook is read by Barbra Streisand. It features Barbra Streisand’s iconic music, interlaced with exclusive anecdotes for the My Name is Barbra audio edition.
Barbra Streisand is by any account a living legend, a woman who in a career spanning six decades has excelled in every area of entertainment. She is among the handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in popular music.
Streisand’s memoir reveals a voice on the page that is every bit as heartfelt, entertaining and spectacular as her best performances. There’s the chilling story, which she’s never told before, of the origins of her legendary stage fright. There’s a hilarious opening line to James Brolin, who she’s been with for 27 years. There’s a page and a half correcting the record on the Streisand Effect, a term that refers to the way efforts to minimize a story can backfire, generating exponentially more press. As Vanity Fair said: ‘if Barbra could plug away for 10 years writing this exhaustive, exhilarating account of her life— then we can do her the courtesy of reading it from start to finish.’
Critic reviews
‘Exhilarating … leaves blood on the page … My Name Is Barbra is 992 pages of startling honesty and self-reflection, deadpan parenthetical asides (including a running bit about how much she loves going to the dentist), encyclopaedic recall of onstage outfits, and rigorous analyses of her films’ Vanity Fair
‘Glorious, exuberant, chatty and candid, a victory lap past all who ever doubted, diminished or dissed her, with lingering high fives for the many supporters . . . generous dollops of chutzpah … Nobody puts Barbra in the corner.’ New York Times
‘The book is crammed with delicious details of backstage arguments, bewildered suitors and at least one incident of falling off a London bus’ BBC ‘Streisand is no less than a living legend, one of a handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and now, she’s taking us all back to where it began. Streisand’s story is truly inspirational and it’s one that you’ll want to pick up again and again’ Glamour

How honest she is
I loved everything about this book. Her love of music, musicals and films had me making lists of what to watch and listen to - it’s a long list! I didn’t want it to end. Loved the music interspersed throughout.

This extraordinary human being
Gosh, my heart. Narration by Barbra herself. The A-Z of emotions - what a one off. This is a brilliantly and uniquely narrated amazing book. It feels often like Streisand is riffing and adding bits - such a personal touch. She's very very likeable. I wish she'd got to make more films. And I wish she hadn't been the subject of snide comments and judgement. She took it all to heart and at times tried to look lesser, in order not to be criticised for getting too big for her boots. People -men and women - can have such a weird reaction to strong women. Thank you for this Barbra - it's a treasure!

Just so good
I didn’t really know much about Barbra until I listened to this book, but after 48 hours of hearing her tell her story in her own voice, I do feel like I know her a little. I admire her determination to be unapologetically herself, to expose her flaws and to tell a great story. She models the benefits of questioning everything in a world where you’re often vilified for challenging the status quo. I now have a list of films I need to see, books I need to read and records I need to hear. And she’s right about coffee icecream,

This is up there as the best.
What an absolute pleasure to have listened to this. Early life right to now. Amazing. And what value! Love that Barbra had all her diaries, loved all the stories. Mum and I used to sing all the songs pre karaoke! I believe in love! Evergreen. Played evergreen at mums funeral in 2021. Always in my heart and memory Barbra. Everyone needs to spend time listening to this! So many hours. So many stories. Thank you for sharing all these.

I liked her a little, now I truly admire her.
First of all, 48 hours sounded obscene but it wasn’t long enough! Fascinating and inspirational life, a beautifully written and narrated life story full of surprises, experiences, facts and examples. I felt so lucky to be on the inside of such a private and capable woman. Her active support of feminism, interest and influence on American politics as well as her remarkable career, love of architecture, art, food and personal life are all laid out as well as snippets from songs.
What a life and what a Dame!
