About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Some books should never be opened.
A spellbinding, edge-of your seat thriller, Ink Blood Sister Scribe follows a family tasked with guarding a trove of magical but deadly books, and the shadowy organisation that will do anything to get them back...even murder.
For generations, the Kalotay family has guarded a collection of rare and dangerous books. Books that let a person walk through walls, or borrow someone else's face; books of magic.
Now, Joanna Kalotay lives alone in the woods of Vermont, their library's sole protector, while her estranged older half-sister, Esther moves between countries and jobs, constantly changing, never staying anywhere for longer than a year, desperate to avoid the dangerous magic that killed her own mother. She is currently working as an electrician on a research base in Antarctica where she has found love. Maybe, finally, she feels free.
But when someone on-base begins using magic, Esther realizes that she can't outrun her family's legacy. The long-separated sisters must work together to unravel the secrets their parents kept hidden, secrets that span centuries and continents, and even other libraries...

"A twisty and thrilling fantasy in which both the magic and the characters have real complexity, real shadows. If, like me, you're a fan of Holly Black and Leigh Bardugo, pick up this book at once." (Kelly Link, Get in Trouble)
"Ink Blood Sister Scribe is so many things at once: an adventure, a puzzle, a twisty thriller, and a tender romance. It is, she says, a magical book about the magic of books; I adored it." (Alix E Harrow, The Once and Future Witches)

immediately captivating
Loved this book. Interesting characters, a great story and a new kind of magic system. There were elements of real darkness in the story but it was never depressing or overly in the way of some dark fantasy. instead it brought magic I to the real world in a way that felt utterly believable and both full of wonder possibilities and horror.

Perfect tale of Magic and books
Really enjoyed this tale of a unique magic system linked to books and hidden libraries. The story was intricate, set in three locations that all converge to a stunning conclusion. Perfect narration, pacing, magic system, locations, characters.

A meandering tale
It started really slow, sped up, slowed down, ended 3/4 of the way through then a waffle style ending, all threads had been tied, so really no need to go on that long. The concept of the book was great, however there was all this explanation to drive home you really understood,

Really enjoyed this! I loved the story and the characters and I'm hoping that a sequel might make an appearance because I'd love to know what happens next!
Excellent narration from Saskia as usual. She's captured the tone of the story brilliantly!

Interesting plot
The first 8 chapters or so are slow going and I was tempted to stop reading the book. I persevered and the book pace improved, and I felt more engaged with the story. I’m glad I read the book and overall enjoyed it. Now I have finished it I can see why it’s classed as a young adult book, I missed that fact when I downloaded it. Nevertheless it was enjoyable.

Absolutely Amazing
I loved this story from start to finish. It had the potential to be another cookie cutter fantasy about blood and ink, magic and books but it’s brilliantly original. The writing is breathtakingly good, I can’t wait to read the physical copy to dive into it all another way and pick up all the wee bits I might have missed through listening.
The narration is also so, so well done and these days that feels hard to come by on here.
I found reading really hard the last couple of years but this book has lit a fire under me to find more exquisite stories like this.
