Compelling, compassionate

A big important read, which I heard about only because of its Women’s Prize nomination

Eye opening

Told very honestly and opened my eyes to a period of history and place I knew little about.

Horrible History

The narrator does a fantastic job telling this traumatic story which is more like nonfiction at times. Although only 13 hours it’s a tough listen.

important topic, poor storytelling

The recount of Sri-Lankan civil war from insider's perspective - an interesting topic, but cardboard characters and dry narration (from the author, not the audiobook's performer) kept me at arm's length emotionally and made the book much less powerful.

Views from a cycle

I listened to the book whilst on a cycle tour of Sri Lanka - it felt good and proper to full immerse myself in this heart breaking story of resistance and its place the people’s history as told by women.

History lesson

This book is a beautifully written account of the trouble in Sri Lanka in the 1980's, then know as Ceylon. The characters are well developed and one easily becomes emotionally involved. It is listed as fiction but I suspect much is non-fiction. Extremely heartfelt and well written, well worth listening to.

Beautifully Crafted

Based on real events in the Sri Lankan civil war and told through the words of a young trainee medic, Ms Ganeshananthan has created a compelling account of the horror of ethnic conflict, its impact on family and friends, the lives and loves lost, the disillusionment with would be “liberators” and the fall out from that on innocent civilians, doubly so in the case of women. Sashi, the narrator, invites us to consider the impact of these events. How would you react? Would you do the same? Would you have the necessary courage? The novel shines a light on mankind’s inability to live in peace with its neighbours and on a conflict continually replicated throughout the world.

Powerful female narrative

The novel encapsulates the conflict of self v society when your family and friends are directly affected by a brutal civil war, mirrored in so many conflicts now. How do we make choices and bear the consequences?

Best contemporary book I've read this year

Sure to become a classic one day. Classics are what I usually read, but this is as good as the best of them.

Brutal story of tragic war

I am of an age where I remember so much of this civil war on the news but the horror of it did not come across. This is a very hard hitting book where one person's freedom fighter is another person's terrorist. Civil war is brutal and I do feel the book rightly shows the Tamil leaders moving towards megalomania rather than representing the people they were supposed to protect. However, the same can be said of the other side. In the end, this story has parralels with all civil wars such as Northern Ireland during the troubles. Not sure I would be comfortable visiting Sri Lanka now.
