THE TOP FIVE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

In 1914, war feels far away to Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. They're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that his best friend is in love with him too.

When Gaunt's mother asks him to enlist, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings. But Ellwood and their classmates soon follow him to the front. Ellwood and Gaunt find love in the trenches – but just as war brought them together, it can tear them apart…
An epic, unforgettable love story between two soldiers in the First World War, In Memoriam is a breath-taking debut.

Heartbreaking and life affirming at the same time

Wonderful characters, absorbing storyline and brilliant narration.
I’ve struggled to get into books - paper or audio - since COVID. It takes a lot to make something penetrate this weird wall of nothingness. This, however, was effortless.
I think we forget that the majority of men who died in the war were barely adults. Just young men at the start of their lives. Going from school to do the worst job in the world. This book tells their story, beautifully. Horrific in parts, glorious in others.
Timely tale when the world is at war. Incredible that we have learned nothing from WW1.

Brilliantly read, evocative

Haunting depiction of First World War through the lens of forbidden love. The narrator is the best I’ve ever encountered, the book is most dialogue and he manages to give each character a distinctive voice. Difficult to believe this is a debut novel.

Moving and vivid

I cared deeply for Gaunt and Ellwood and was so moved by their story. The descriptions of life in the trenches are vivid and powerful. Occasionally the plot felt a little contrived, which stopped it being perfect… but nonetheless, I loved this book and wholeheartedly recommend it. The narration was also excellent, he brought the characters to life but never distracted from the story.

Devastating and beautiful

Beautifully written book, the characterisation, the thoroughly researched depictions of the war, the relationships, all are painted clearly, with care and love. The beauty of the developing relationships though, against the awful backdrop of war and what it did to a generation of boys, is painful, but makes it all the more real and important to bear witness.

Should be a classic

Beautifully and evocatively written, this story illustrates the horror of the trenches and what warfare did to the soldiers. All the time, I found myself reminding myself that these captains and sergeants were only 18 years old. What they experienced and suffered was horrific and the number of deaths was beyond comprehension.
Wonderfully narrated by Christian Coulson who should definitely be considered for a part, should this ever be made into a film; which it should.
Highly recommended.
I wish my review was as eloquent as the book.

Brilliant

Not normally a story hear about from the WW. So sensitively done. Not something I would normally read but tempted by previous reviews.
