Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
A gripping and explosive account of Vladimir Putin's tyranny, charting his rise from spy to tsar, exposing the events that led to his invasion of Ukraine and his assault on Europe.
In Killer in the Kremlin, award-winning journalist John Sweeney takes listeners from the heart of Putin's Russia to the killing fields of Chechnya, to the embattled cities of an invaded Ukraine.
In a disturbing exposé of Putin's sinister ambition, Sweeney draws on thirty years of his own reporting—from the Moscow apartment bombings to the atrocities committed by the Russian Army in Chechnya, to the annexation of Crimea and a confrontation with Putin over the shooting down of flight MH17—to understand the true extent of Putin's long war.
Drawing on eyewitness accounts and compelling testimony from those who have suffered at Putin's hand, we see the heroism of the Russian opposition, the bravery of the Ukrainian resistance, and the brutality with which the Kremlin responds to such acts of defiance, assassinating or locking away its critics, and stopping at nothing to achieve its imperialist aims.
In the midst of one of the darkest acts of aggression in modern history—Russia's invasion of Ukraine—this book shines a light on Putin's rule and poses urgent questions about how the world must respond.

Thank you
Thank you, John, for your courage and perseverence in bringing us this important work. As a Putin watcher, since the days when he put away his leather jacket and stopped strutting around chewing gum with his mouth open (it's there on film) and began his climb to the top, I thought I had read and heard it all, but your book taught me so much more.

A harrowing insight into the kremlin
this book is a harrowing, yet extremely intriguing insight into the way the kremlin deals with people who disagree with them. one day not too soon John should add a chapter 21, the last breath of Putin.

An essential story clearly told
John Sweeney is not an armchair theoretician but a close witness to the events described. He knows what he is talking about, understands the significance of the people and events and gives a strong interpretation of what they mean.
The message about the danger that Putin represents could not be clearer.
Essential reading

It adds massively to this recording that it's read by the author
I was humbled by this book - I'm left feeling naive and ignorant - and wanting to learn more.

Deja vu
I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I hadn't already heard most of it already on his free podcast, 'taking on putin'.

Insightful, and poignant reminder of what Putin’s Russia is.
John Sweeney narrates his book with style and panache.
A rueful reminder of what Putin”s Russia is; a terrorist state. John has carefully collated the timeline of murders that have eroded any hope of Russia being a true democracy. And the West, allowing itself to be taken in by Putin and his crooks.
John’s recent reporting from Ukraine, a valuable insight into Putin’s war on democracy.

A small masterpiece
John manages to tell the story of his on the ground knowledge of and experience in the tragedies witnessed carried out by Vladimir Putin.
His ability to remain Human in the inhuman and disturbing world of despotic behaviour and slaughter of innocents is truly remarkable.
A must read
Andreas
