Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The number one New York Times best seller, now in an expanded audiobook edition that includes detailed historical context for the democracy-threatening Ukrainian conflict and a call to action for modern times.

This edition includes the best-selling original On Tyranny, read by the author.

In this exclusive audiobook edition, which includes eight hours of new content, Timothy Snyder combines the original On Tyranny (2017)—20 lessons on how history can instruct our response to the rise of tyranny around the world today—with 20 new lessons that answer the questions everyone is asking about Russia's war on Ukraine. With forays into history, he clarifies the causes of the Russian invasion and the meaning of Ukrainian resistance, and explains the war's connections to threats to democracy around the world. Linking past and present, and speaking only from notes, Snyder delivers an important call to arms and roadmap for resistance, providing invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come. This is the long view we all need, given to us right now by a leading expert.

Critic reviews

"Timothy Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. He has written the rare kind of book that can be read in one sitting but will keep you coming back to help regain your bearings." (Masha Gessen, about On Tyranny)

Great book on recent developments

I loved the book. The only downside to it is that it is very American centric. it is very much about the US and obviously Russia and Ukraine. It might have helped to delve into several other examples of countries that have equal important problems with slides to destabilization, Russian influenced elections, and involvement in Ukraine, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Moldova are I think most interesting examples, also some more examples of countries who have been 'brave' in the struggle this book describes, such as Finland or Estonia, Maybe for a future update?

Crystal clear

Snyder writes for the non-historian. Clear and concise writing that ordinary folks can digest. The George Orwell of his discipline.

Valuable interpretation of Ukrainian history and its relationship with Putin’s (violent) magical thinking

On Tyranny is fantastic ; Snyder’s additional lessons in this version crown it.

Thoughtfully written and delivered, Snyder sketches out Ukraine’s deep history before elaborating on it, painting in the layers of complexity that have resulted in the nation that exists today.

In doing so, Snyder reveals how the events in the Maidan (2013-2014) helped inform the original text.

Snyder tells a story that places Ukraine at the centre of European history. Not only does he give the country relevance, he gives it importance.

One of the key lessons is that we all depend on a successful outcome for Ukraine; Putin must not win any inch of this territory.

Definitely not a rant

Someone said this book was a rant about the US election of 2016. It's anything but that. it's a very measured explanation of how tyranny works, or doesn't work, and how those lessons apply to Russia's barbaric invasion of Ukraine. It's the sort of book that ultimately pushes you to think about what is being said and come to your own conclusions.

A MUST LISTEN AUDIOBOOK

as a 3rd year undergraduate student of politics and philosophy with a special interest in international relations and security, i listened to this audiobook to further extend my understanding and knowledge of the subject. i found myself filled with astonishment, awe, shock, pride, fear, hope, purpose, excitement, courage, patriotism and ultimately understanding. at every chapter and every nugget of valuable information i listened to, i was desperate to share what i had just heard with someone, anyone. i wished i had someone listening along with me to talk in depth over what we had just heard, as i felt so compelled by it. it’s now rare i have a conversation with pretty much anyone without mentioning this audiobook and urgently asserting it’s value and recommending they listen as soon as they are able to. timothy snyder, i tip my hat to you, sir. you are a voice of light, truth and hope in this world and a truly global citizen. i think i’ll be re listening to sections of this book for a long time to come… thank you!

Can't recommend enough

The first part explains how the American political climate resembles interwar European authoritarians. The second part is an exploration of the mythical motivations for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, how those mythical narratives compare to real European history and how understanding real history is necessary for a political imagination. The book is inspired. The book is a concentration of Snyder's life's work. Snyder narrates it excellently.
