About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Kissinger's six leaders are Konrad Adenauer, Charles de Gaulle, Richard Nixon, Anwar Sadat, Lee Kuan Yew and Margaret Thatcher. All of them were formed in a period when established institutions collapsed all over Europe, colonial structures gave way to independent states in Asia and Africa, and a new international order had to be created from the vestiges of the old. Kissinger penetratingly analyses each of these leaders' careers through the highly individual strategies of statecraft which he presents them as embodying, to show how it is the combination of character and circumstance which creates history. Kissinger's public experience, personal knowledge and historical perceptions enrich the book with insights and judgements such as only he could make.

Fascinating, though the title is misleading

Leadership is a great book, though it's more of a study of leaders than an analysis of their leadership per se. The late Henry Kissinger provides a potted biography of six national leaders, enriching the historical account with his first hand assessment of their conduct. The result is fascinating and personal as well as purely historical. Because Kissinger was acquainted with the leaders profiled, his occasionally telling anecdotes ensure that the book doesn't devolve into dry analysis. The six accounts are bookended by a general introduction and conclusion; in these sections Kissinger speaks more broadly about the nature of leadership, expanding into very contemporary areas such as AI and the debasement of education. While leadership is frequently alluded to, I feel that the book could equally have been titled 'Character'. Although each chapter is divided into sections, each of the Audible 'chapters' is an hour or longer in duration and would have benefitted from subdivision. Sean Patrick Hopkins is an adequate narrator, and can be forgiven his occasional mispronunciation of unfamiliar names. A recommended long read.

A Seat at the Table

You may want to have a Presidential view from time to time however the real seat at the table over decades was with Kissinger. Brilliant insights into three great Leaders, each of whom had a very close relationship with Kissinger.
Subdue your concerns on his human rights and support of subversive regimes, this is a great listen.
Highly recommended

History telling

It is more reciting history rather than learning about leadership. So boarding that I didn’t finished the book.
