Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The gripping new novel by the nation's favourite storyteller, Lesley Pearse.
What happens when the person closest to you has led a life of deception?
After the funeral of her mother, Sally, Alice Kent is approached by a man named Angus Tweedy. He claims to be her father and tells her that he served time in prison for marrying Sally bigamously.
What does he hope to gain telling her this now, 30 years on? How can her adored dad Ralph not be her true father? And why did her mother betray her so badly?
She had accepted Sally's many faults and her reluctance to never speak of the past. But faced with this staggering deception, Alice knows she must uncover the whole truth about her mother.
Whatever the cost.
Alice's journey into her mother's past is one of incredulity as she discovers a woman shaped by a truly traumatic childhood....

Very enjoyable story and excellent performance
I listened to this on a beach in Kos and it was an ideal vacation novel. The reader was terrific. Great inflection, tempo, accents and voices. Highly recommended.

Another good story from Lesley Pearse
This was my first time of listening to an audiobook, though I have read most of Lesley Pearse’s novels. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the narrator was good too. I wasn’t sure about the different voices and found this a bit distracting.

Mhmm much ado about nothing
I obviously listened to all of the book but don’t think I’ll bother with this author again. Everything seemed to be duplicated chapter by chapter. Bit bland for my taste.

Not for me
This book was not for me sadly, I gave up on it at Chapter 13. I found the characters and story unbelievable, and the narration was not great.
It has lots of 5 star reviews, so as always it is subjective, depending on the type of book you enjoy.

It passed the time
The story of Alice’s mother’s life was interesting and eventful, and I was always keen to hear what happened next, but the writing felt a bit predictable and formulaic. The narration was also a bit lacking.

Beautifully read and written.
I have loved this book. It was fascinating to learn more about Alice’s Mother’s life with every alternate chapter. The story unfolded from the 1950s till the 1980s like an onion pealing away to reveal more insights that could easily lead to tears.

Deception?????? or Makebelieve ????????
I had thought this would be a good read, but really, the story was pure fantasy. How could anyone have lived such a life. It was pathetic to say the least.
The narration was awful I am sorry to say.
Sorry to be such a harsh critic.
