About this listen

A encounter with a boy dangling from the sky changes pickpocket Magpie's life forever. Like her, the boy dreams of flying over the rooftops of Paris. His family, the Montgolfiers, are desperate to be first to discover the secret of flight.

Together with Pierre, Magpie is soon caught up in a world of inflatable bloomers, spies and a trio of unruly animals in a race to be the first to fly a hot air balloon - in front of the King and Queen of France.

Good story let down by poor narration

Not up to Emma Carroll's usual standards and this was made worse by the awful narration. Why the narrator gave one of the characters a Scottish accent baffles me especially when he was French. The main character Magpie who is also French is voiced as an East End street urchin which unfortunately gets very tiresome after an hour or two. I also didn't find the main protagonists particularly memorable. However, it is interesting that the author mixed real history with fiction and this was the best part of the adventure.
