Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

How to Change Your Mind is a report from what could very well be the future of human consciousness, written and read by Michael Pollan.

When LSD was first discovered in the 1940s, it seemed to researchers, scientists and doctors as if the world might be on the cusp of psychological revolution. It promised to shed light on the deep mysteries of consciousness, as well as offer relief to addicts and the mentally ill. But in the 1960s, with the vicious backlash against the counter-culture, all further research was banned. In recent years, however, work has quietly begun again on the amazing potential of LSD, psilocybin and DMT. Could these drugs in fact improve the lives of many people? Diving deep into this extraordinary world and putting himself forward as a guinea-pig, Michael Pollan has written and read a remarkable history of psychedelics and a compelling portrait of the new generation of scientists fascinated by the implications of these drugs.

'His approach is steeped in honesty and self-awareness. His cause is just, his thinking is clear, and his writing is compelling' - Washington Post

'An easy-going humane generosity ... mischievous self-regard ... as if Henry David Thoreau had had an encounter with Woody Allen and never been quite the same since' - Simon Schama

Fascinating!

Really well researched with a full history of LSD and psychedelic research. I really enjoyed this book and found the whole thing fascinating. Michael Pollan himself seems to have enjoyed it, it was really great listening to something where it seemed like the author had such a good time! It totally opened my eyes to psychedelics as I had only heard scare stories throughout the years but never had read any tangible research, just hearsay so I have to say this was simply a joy to listen to.
The only thing I did notice that there wasn't a lot of negative discussion on the option of psychedelics but maybe it wasn't there (doubtful). Anyway, a good read and worthwhile.

Excellent mind opening

Very well written book that is interesting cover to cover. Historical coverage of psychedelics and their medical use, personal experience report, and commentary on current scientific and medical understanding. This isn’t a book about Drugs, but about consciousness and states of mind. Meditators and anyone interested in mental experience will find this interesting. Minimum woo

Thought provoking (if that isn’t an ironic remark)

MP is an excellent writer and as good a ‘guide’ to the whole subject as he recommends for individuals engaging in the process. As a psych grad & therapist I was grateful to see the whole, ( potentially controversial & misleading), subject covered in an intelligent, balanced, open but grounded, way. I especially appreciated the wider discussions MP explored on the new insights ( though not new to Buddhism & other mystic traditions) opens for western psychology & understandings of the mind.
I was also pleased MP did his own ( v listenable) narration: anyone else would have been strange & at odds with his very personal approach.
Highly recommended to those seriously interested in the whole field.

Interesting audio book. Which everyone needs to invest on.

Interesting this, especially on what it talks about. I was recommended. But didn't realise Tim Ferris also recommended it. But just finding the real you, which could be from these, I wouldn't call it a drug but somehow cure. It opened up my eyes in life, and God willing, this could get the best out of me. I recommend everyone to give this a listen. And also, check Michael Pollen on YouTube. #Thingsofthatnature
