About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Railway Children by E. Nesbit, read by Jenny Agutter.

When Father is taken away unexpectedly, Roberta, Peter, Phyllis and their mother have to leave their comfortable life in London to go and live in a small cottage in the country. The children seek solace in the nearby railway station and make friends with Perks the Porter and the Station Master himself.

Each day, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis run down the field to the railway track and wave at the passing London train, sending their love to Father. Little do they know that the kindly old gentleman passenger who waves back holds the key to their father's disappearance.

Lovely

What a perfect story! Jenny Agutter is obviously the perfect choice for narrator. I have always cried when watching the film, and I found tears in my eyes again when she said, "My daddy! My daddy!"
I love this book.

A wonderful book

Beautifully read A joy to listen to by children and adults who love a good story . A wealthy family from London become poor and move to Yorkshire. There they have adventures and make many friends. The three children explore the countryside with few restrictions and gradually become the ‘Railway Children.’

Classic

I've read this story more times than I can remember. I already owned one audio version but couldn't resist getting this one read by Jenny Agutter, and it doesn't disappoint. Easy to listen to, and with her experience of the story as an actor, Agutter brings something extra to the interpretation. This will be my go-to version in future.

Beautiful

I love this story so much. It’s one of my favourites of all time. Beautifully read and wonderful to listen to at bed time. I cried at the ending which was unexpected but not surprising.

Taken back to childhood

Listening to this story took me back to when I first read it in 1980. Loved that Jenny read it.

Amazing story

This is a spectacular book, I loved it. l think this is a very good book to read for kids especially of age 7- to 12. I recommend your children to read books like this one to make them what to read other ones when they get older.
