About this listen
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Darkness by Ragnar Jonasson.
A young woman, an asylum seeker from Russia, is found murdered on the seaweed-covered rocks of the Vatnsleysuströnd in Iceland. Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir of the Reykjavik Police is called to investigate this - the final case in her career before she is forced into retirement.
When Hulda starts to ask questions, it isn't long before she realises that no-one can be trusted and that no-one is telling the whole truth.
Spanning Reykjavik, the Icelandic highlands and the cold, isolated fjords, The Darkness is a classy new thriller from one of the most exciting new names in Scandi noir.

Entertaining
I nearly gave up at the beginning because I couldn't warm up to the narrator. But I gave it a chance and then got sucked in the story line and made it to the end!

engaging
Well narrated with appropriate feeling. The story itself was good, enabling you to engage with the characters and was pleasantly unpredictable. I thought I knew where the plot was headed for a long time but was happy to be proved wrong. I would definitely read another work by the same author.

great book
Brilliant Icelandic setting for a chilling tale. A bit thrown by odd pronunciation of names.

Great story. Disappointing narration
Read much too quickly by Amanda. Perhaps down to editing ?
Also her Icelandic pronunciation was dreadful.
Shame as I really enjoyed the story

The Darkness By Ragnar Jonasson
I feel privileged and humbled to be read a story by Amanda Redman who has definitely got hidden talents apart from acting, you could say she has New Tricks no pun intended or maybe just a little one.
Loved it !!! Awesome !!!

In the end an average novel .
I generally like Scandinavian noir with its bleak landscape s but this one fell short. The main character had the potential to offer a different perspective to the norm but the story was too weak.

Only OK
As a story, it never gripped me from the start to the end.
I simply could not get on with the narration, first of all, as others have said, the reading was too speedy, - I slowed it down; secondly I found it was read with no feeling with no characterisation and whilst not quite monotone it was definitely mono feel. I did wonder if the translation in to English had dampened down some of the atmosphere that always, somehow for me, felt missing. I was sad, I like Amanda as an actor and she has a soft toned voice.
Whist not wanting to give anything away, with the ending as it was it made me wonder what was the point of the whole story, all a bit miserable - maybe the Icelandic weather etc. does that to folk; although I was privileged to live next door to Icelandic neighbours for several years and they were bright happy people.
