Summary
A thrilling new BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Jules Verne's classic novel.
'Descend, bold traveller into the crater of the Jokul of Snæfell, which the shadow of Scartaris touches before the kalends of July and you will attain the centre of the earth. Which I have done.'
Renowned professor Otto Lidenbrock discovers a mysterious runic cryptogram in a rare manuscript. His nephew, Axel, accidentally cracks the code, which is by a Sixteenth Century alchemist who claims to have found a pathway to the centre of the Earth! Lidenbrock decides he must see for himself if such a journey is possible, and with the reluctant Axel and their guide, Hans, the three venture into the heart of a dormant Icelandic volcano.
Shock and peril await at every turn, from a raft voyage across a subterranean sea - where they witness a battle between two prehistoric monsters - to a terrifying lightning storm that threatens to capsize them, and an expedition into the magma chamber of an active volcano filled with boiling lava. Will they ever make it back to the surface?
Full of action, surprise and discovery, this suspenseful dramatisation of Verne's ultimate adventure story stars Joel MacCormack and Stephen Critchlow.

Deceptive cover. Axel is way too whiny and over dramatic
The cover if one looks closer is in fact the repurposed promotional image of Rexy from Jurassic World, duplicated and reversed to face the volcano. No dinosaurs in this story, unfortunately.
The prehistoric animals that do show up are a plesiosaur that battles an icthyosaur, as well as a mammoth herd led by a large shaggy giant human.
The story is a decent enough adventure that begins by solving the mystery of an ancient text that leads to a subterranean adventure into the centre of the earth, which is a secluded preserved prehistoric paradise beneath the earth’s surface but good grief, Axel’s voice acting is incredibly annoying. Almost switched off multiple times due to how melodramatic and hysterical he gets when he becomes lost and/or scared in this story, which is a lot.
Overall a decent, tame by today’s standards prehistoric adventure undercut by Axel’s constant panicking.

A well remembered story
I have read this story many times, but when I was much younger, I could never remember the end of the story. Now I have listened to it I shall read it again. It was well presented and in a very clear manner. My Grandson, of 10, has already requested to listen to it. Great for students who are studying the book.

An amazing science fiction adventure
Originally published in 1864 and still an amazing science fiction adventure which has been masterly crafted into an audio drama by the BBC (2017).
Was expecting a large drill, but no, Professor Lidenbrock, Axel and Hans journey by foot and rope.
Brilliant escapism
