*THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER*
Politics has changed. For decades Britain was divided between Left and Right but united in its belief in a two-party state. Now, with nationalism resurgent and mainstream parties in turmoil, stark new divisions define the country and the centre ground is deserted.
Nick Clegg witnessed this change from the inside. Here he offers a frank account of his experiences and puts the case for a new politics based on reason and compromise.
He writes candidly about the tense stand-offs within government and the decision to enter coalition with the Conservatives in the first place. He also lifts the lid on the arcane worlds of Westminster and Brussels, the vested interests that suffocate reform, as well as the achievements his party made despite them.
Whatever your political persuasion, if you wish to understand politics in Britain today you cannot afford to ignore this book.
'Beautifully written' Rory Stewart
'Compelling' Ian McEwan

'Essential' Robert Peston

Superb Analysis
The best analysis of the political crisis overtaking Britain with some sobering insights into the inadequacies of the existing Westminster system. A must read for anyone who cares about the future of the UK.

Fantastic and Gripping. Very knowledge expanding.
Fantastic book showing what really happened behind the curtain of Downing Street and how having a coalition government is actually good for the nation - both in the short term and even now in the long term after the Lib Dem/Conservative coalition has ended we are still reaping the benefits and papers pushed through from 2010 onwards.
Definitely worth a read/listen and no prior knowledge of politics is needed.
As expected from a public speaker the narration is emotive, gripping and powerful; well done Nick Clegg!
His next book: "How to stop Brexit and make Britain grateful again" is my next read.

I decided to listen to this because I’ve never quite trusted Nick Clegg. I still don’t.

Nick has persuaded me to vote libdem again!
Interesting mixture of general autobiography, an account of being in a coalition and finally an argument in favour of liberalism

Full of insights
It is a thoughtful selfless appraisal of the coalition years. A model for political thinking which embraces and respects the views of opposing ideas.

I will always be a Clegg-maniac
Would you try another book written by Nick Clegg or narrated by Nick Clegg?
Definitely.
What does Nick Clegg bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Whilst Nick Clegg is my political hero and inspiration, this book should have been exactly what he sets out it is not within the introduction, indeed it should have been a chance for him to say what happened: between rose garden and cenotaph; between the Liberal Democrats and Conservative parties in 2010 in forming the first British coalition government in my lifetime; a kiss and tale revelation of his time as Deputy Prime Minister designed to settle scores with his coalition partners and; a self congratulatory re-writing of history. For a politician who put the national interest first, Nick Clegg deserves to write a book that covers the things that this book is not. He was and still is a pragmatist in an unfair political arena, where the public had a Deputy Prime Minister between 2010 and 2015 that it needed, but did not deserve as he fought for reform in a political system designed to resist change – with the exception of Brexit, which might be one of the few policy differences I have with him. Nevertheless, he fairly reflects on contemporary British politics during a period that is cruel to pragmatic centralists and thankfully he reiterates that the Liberal Democrats were right to enter coalition at a time the public too often forgets was a time where the British coffers needed to be balanced by a government fiscally responsible. Whilst some mistakes were made during the coalition, Nick Clegg concedes these mistakes. Unfortunately his absolute bias against Brexit, faialing to recognise in a fair manner the opposing view to his own, makes uncomfortable listening at times for someone like me who believes passionately in a ‘Hard Brexit’ as he presents a binary choice between ‘optimists’ and ‘pessimists’ which surely he would not consider me as a member of the Liberal Democrats, to be in the latter category. As I allude to, I was inspired by Nick Clegg to follow British politics in 2010 and continue be to this day, fully believing that he might of continued to offer better leadership that his two successors.
