About this listen

Meet Quentin Coldwater, king of the bizarre and wonderful land of Fillory. But he is getting restless, even in heaven a man needs a little adventure. So when a steward is murdered on a morning's hunt Quentin gets exactly that. But this quest is like no other. What starts as a glorified cruise to faraway lands soon becomes the stuff of nightmares....

The Magician King is a grand voyage into the dark, glittering heart of magic, an extraordinary journey that allows the imagination to run riot and proves Grossman is the modern heir to C.S. Lewis.

This is a book like no other.

Julia's story stopped my breath.

We see Julia's record of events and it is truly heartbreaking. I couldn't stop listening.

Excellent!

As an avid fan of the TV show, I really appreciate the source material however in this case I actually prefer the book to the show... despite "Polly's" hilarious accent!

Great story & storytelling- terrible Australian Accent!

I really enjoyed this book, the story was great and engaging, though I found the end came a bit quickly after a long build up.

In general, the reading was excellent. The diction was clear and there was the right level of emotion. However, I had up take 2 stars off for the abysmal Australian accent. It was so bad that it took you right out of the story and whenever I heard it coming I would wince.

Other than that, heartily recommended.

Crocodile DunPoppy?

I'm really enjoying these books. The narrator's tone has always seemed quite cynical to me but that is not by any means out of step with the content. However, Australian accents are not his strong suit. Crocodile Dundee seems to be his only reference which is turning Poppy into something of an unintended comic character. That is why my rating falls below 5 stars.

Great but

I've marked the performance down, purely for the Australian accent bordering on being offensive. Very distracting. 😂

Very very good

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Its so nice to have a bit of a twisted adult version of a fairy tale. It's got a sense of humour as well. The characters don't seem to take themselves as seriously as in most fantasy books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

So far, Julia. She's never what you expect.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

This is the reason I gave 4 stars, Poppy, who is meant to be Australian has the WORST Australian accent I have ever heard. The narrator is great at everyone else, but wow, every time Poppy speaks it sets my teeth on edge.

A teenager's book

Slightly better than book one which drags on a bit. Still crosses Narnia with Harry Potter though slightly darker than first book with the hero becoming a sacrifice with no seeming reward.
