Summary

A downloadable audiobook edition of the modern classic Perfume read by Sean Barrett.

Survivor, genius, perfumer, killer: This is Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. He is abandoned on the filthy streets of Paris as a child, but grows up to discover he has an extraordinary gift: A sense of smell more powerful than any other human's.

Soon, he is creating the most sublime fragrances in all the city. Yet there is one odour he cannot capture. It is exquisite, magical: The scent of a young virgin. And to get it he must kill. And kill. And kill...

Kurt Cobain’s Favourite Book

Read somewhere this was Kurt Cobain’s favourite book (and I knew of the film adaptation) so thought I’d see what it was like. A very good but grotesque book. I recommend.

I'm only 10 chapters in, but am spellbound

The narration is possibly the best I have ever heard. I can think of only two other novels in which the narrator was so well fitted to the text.
I will be seeking out more by Sean Barrett.

The writing is beautiful. Dark, unsettling and with a sliver of wry humour. Why do I care about what will happen to this monstrous and monstrously neglected child?

The only complaint I can make is that this book demands (deserves) 100% attention, so is no good for listening before bed or whilst busy with other tasks. Hardly a complaint.

Macabre

Truly dark and visceral. A meisterwork in a historical and sociopathic context. Bloody scary as well!

Good... but weird

This book was interesting and the overall story had a clever concept. The voice reading keeps you engaged and brings the story to life. However, towards the end it got incredibly weird the story seems to take a complete U turn to its regular path and ruined the overall experience. Worth a go but prepare for a disappointing ending.

Immersive narration and gripping story

The narrator does a phenomenal job portraying the characters and the mood, as well as pronouncing the French names well.

The story is so fantastical that it borders on Fantasy, the author effectively paints us the world of odors and scents in such a beautiful manner that we genuinely experience these odors and scents ourselves.

Sean Barrett is such a joy to listen to

Irrespective of the brilliance of this book, the brilliant narrator really brings it to life. Wonderful.

Stunning

This is the best audiobook I have read. The language and story whisk you away to the places described. The narration is perfect.
